Tax laws and regulations that more-so favour local owned businesses and local people. For example the Caribbean islands give away all of their most profitable air routes to non-local airlines and then wonder why local airlines can't make a profit... I mean you'd never see Caribbean airlines being allowed to do that in other countries...
If Caribbean Airlines were allowed to fly between profitable routes in say the United States. Perhaps like New York to Miami. Or like Washington D.C. to New York City... Things would be different concerning their financial situations.
Caribbean airlines are additionally expected to serve the money losing routes in the region and the non-national airlines can avoid them. Fair is fair, if outside airlines can fly in the Caribbean on the profitable routes. Caribbean airlines should be able to serve that other nation's profitable routes too.
Another thing is---- more of the Caribbean governments need to provide their citizen's with low interest loans to do things like startup companies and so on... So long as an individuals' business plan is sound--- and perhaps plausible...
The governments should also allow local businesses to have like a grace period or so before trans-national congloms. can enter the market so that the local companies have a chance to get themselves situated before a more aggressive company of-scale can come and under-cut them and drive them out of business.
The Caribbean can boost the integration process also by merging some sectors successfully now.....
Some industries that can be merged now possibly with little to no impact on the various governments in the region.
Health.... Various groups of countries in the region could merge their health sector with a single minister of health and not have it impact the various territories too badly... It is in the interest of such a health minister to make sure that all islands under their care are effectively meeting the needs of all nationals.
Postal.... The shipping and postal industries under the various governments in the Caribbean could be merged into a regional shipping company perhaps jointly owned by all of the governments.... Hopefully the cost savings that could accrue in doing this would bring the cost of shipping down between the Caribbean and other countries outside of the region and would help to give the region more experience in moving people and freight around the region more efficiently then at present by air and by sea.
Air controllers? The Caribbean I think is at the stage where they can probably create a Caribbean wide air-traffic control system and also maritime control system...Such an entity could be in charge of security in all airports/terminals under it's jurisdiction. (Sort of like how the FAA in the USA watches over all states there.) It could be subject to scrutiny and regular security audits by the customs and immigration staff in each the countries/territories as a check and balance.
Currency.... Sheesh the Caribbean can't come up with a single workable currency yet? Easy idea. Create a new one. Name it the Amero (For "the Americas") and market as a currency that can welcome-in any nation that wants to join. I suggest pegging it either to the Euro or to Gold and allow nationals in all territories/countries in the region to be able to buy and sell in this secondary currency. Thus--- each island that wants can keep their own currency (for now.) and they can do so but they can reap the rewards of still using a second currency that could work in other regional countries/territories and there's no pressure for anyone to give up their "identity" in their current currency....
*Coast Guard... This could be merged into a single or a couple of units across the region....
*Environment... A single or a couple of ministers of environment should surfice across the region. There doesn't need to be like 30-40 like there probably are now... The environment is the same across the region and all countries should be able to stick to a single tough standard to protect the environment.
*Communications... There could be fewer ministers of communications as well. How many people do we need to oversee just a handful of TV and radio stations in islands that are spread far apart from one another and require licenses that only need to be renewed every soo--- many years???
For something to work like I outlined above I suggest each island/territory take a certain sector that they would be responsible for and they would be in-charge of that regionally. So for example you could have the head of communications in the Caribbean region based-in St. Lucia and at the same time the head of perhaps the regional postal services in like Dominica... Ofcourse they could get by with simple managers in each of the territories/countries to oversee region wide changes being implemented from the top.... But it would allow the whole region to flow more smoothly in the end and would allow more uniformity across the region. |

Really good sewing and handicraft shops. You do find these in some islands, but surprisingly they are completely missing on other islands, where you'd be hard put to buy a needle and thread. I think that if there were more of these, it would encourage creative hobbies and even assist in setting some people up in careers. |

For Caribbean residents:
We don't have safety from crime
Some islands lack employment opportunities
For people on vacation the Caribbean has everything...Hotels have security. |

Actually the Caribbean needs less shopping, etc. and more beaches! I particularly love going to Turks & Caicos. No nightlife, no real shopping, no historical sights to visit. Just water, sun and sand - and no feeling guilty about doing nothing! |

Vybes give really good answers. I am on a rush so I can't give any suggestions but if what Vybes say could work, I think that the caribbean could become pretty strong economically and politticaly.
OH, what I need? I need peace in my country: Haiti
and we need a caribbean or Haitian Airline so we Carribeans people can stop making foreign airlines comapnies rich.
We also need to stop mulattos, moreno, black, white ,discrimination in the caribbean.
We should also stop denigrating Creole for French, English or Dutch. After all the creole we speak is a part of ourselves.
We should also make US and Canadians citizen get visa to come to our countries. and NAFTA should work to integrate all the islands so our trade can progress. |

The Caribbean is the Caribbean. If it had stuff that other countries did it would'nt be the Caribbean. Like sunshine and beautiful sunsets. Who else has that ? Some stuff can improve like more movie theaters, Six Flags, Disney Land..etc. It's not necessary but it would be cool to have. |
