What does the "average" person eat in the Dominican Republic?

The typical Dominican cuisine is very rich and varied. The most common meal known as “la bandera” (the flag) consists of white rice, beans, meat, vegetables and fritos verdes (green plantains fritters). The Dominican Sancocho is a gastronomic derivative of the Spanish cocido (stew), and each region of the country has its peculiar way of preparing it.

The average person trys to eat the kind of food he gets at home. Steak, chicken, pasta, fish and pork. The more adventurous person will try the countries specialty foods. To name a few)
Tostones (fried plantains with seasonings)
Moro (white rice with black beans and tomato sauce)
Chivo qusado (goat stew)
The Dominicans cook with garlic, onions, coriander and oregano.

The Dominican cuisine is mainly based on rice meals. They have "La Bandera" =rice, beans, chicken. "El Chalcocho", is
with 3 kind of meat, vegetables and rice (more like a soup).
The last 10 years the Dominican cuisine is on extension due to the fact that they have more access to new recipes and ideas coming from Europe and Usa. The fish cuisine based on a few different kinds of fishes (strange for a island!) and here I learned to enjoy shark and that is delicious!

The typical dish is "meat, rice and beans" that's what we call la bandera (the flag), We also eat mangu (smashed platanos), Moro ( its rice with the beans mixed cooked on the same bowl) , locrio (rice with chicken cooked on the same bowl). Sancocho ( a big soup with different kind of meat, platains, yuca and a lot of other ingredients) we also eat lambi, chaca and a lot of things, if you want a more specific answer fell free to send me a message.

It depends on their income. I lived there 18 months and it was mostly rice and bananas. They have several rice dishes and some are very good. Americans visiting there can buy American food and do there own cooking.
