Ms Understood

What hotel in the Dominican Republic is walking distance from a town and not too far from an airport?

I am not too interested in staying in an all-inclusive hotel, I would rather be able to stay in an affordable, nice hotel but still be able to experience the culture and people. Any help is appreciated. Also, is there any advantage to using a travel agency? I would much rather do it myself but I am just worried about legit transportation to and from the hotel and to neighboring towns.

I would check out www.naturacabana.com
This is a nice Inn, that will give you some great luxuries, but still allow you're vacation to be simple, and you'll be able to experience culture. It's located right in between the towns of Sosua and Cabarete (about 8 minutes to each), and it's about 15 minutes from the airport in Puerto Plata.
I personally like Cabarete, I live in the area, and it's really laid back. I think Sosua attracts more older people, and men. Although their beach is nice.
That's why I reccomend this hotel, it's close to both towns so you'll be able to explore a bit more, it offers a great beach, and they are also able to plan excursions for you.

You don't have to worry about transportation to the hotel from the airport! They are listed on a board who much to what town! Price is a little high but thats life!

Richard said that it was 5 minutes from the Puerto Plata Airport to Sosua but it is about 8 minutes to the tourist area where you will want to stay! The Puerto Plata airport is actually IN Sosua but still a taxi ride to where you want to go and it is 20 or 25 US dollars for the cab ride!

When you book see if the hotel has an alternative way for you to get to the hotel!

If you are a single girl I would suggest Cabarete instead of Sosua although I live in Sosua! Sosua is known as a MANS paradise and although there are many women travelers here I think Cabarete would be closer to what you may enjoy!

You can also stay at a condo instead of a hotel! I have condos I rent out in Sosua and I know there are MANY in Cabarete!

should you chose Sosua you can be right in town. I've listed a couple which are good. Tropix is basic, inexpensive but close to everything. Sosua by the sea is more upscale and offers both AI and room only. Our Yahoo Sosua group has many hotels listed in our links. you can easily check out whether you save by booking with an agent or contacting the hotels directly. I should have added Sosua is only 5 minutes from the Puerto Plata airport. Jazzpaging is correct Sosua would be at least eight minutes maybe even ten minutes from the arport. In any case it is much closer to the airport than Puerto Plata. as for taking a taxi from whatever hotel you chose, your hotel should be able to recommend someone.

Check out the Hotel Paraiso de Colon ( http://www.resideo.com/do/puertoplata/95884890.hotel ) - they have their own restaurant and bar, and it's a 10 minute walk to beaches and downtown Sosua.

"This family-owned hotel offers a no-frills, low- price option to more expensive beachfront hotels in the area. "

Hope that helps -- if not, there are lots of other hotels on that same site. Good luck!

You will need to take a TAXI at the airport to any hotel... just tell the driver what kind of hotel you are looking for and he will take you there... I've stayed at some hotels downtown and that is a real experience... The DR has some of the biggest bugs I have ever seen in any hotel.
