This is just an area in Kingston. Kingston is divided up in several sections...Kingston 2, Kingston 3, Kingston 4, Kingston 5 etc. |

Thats a postal zone within the kingston Metropolitan area (which covers Kingston & urban parts of St. Andrew).
The area is divided into 20 zones. Each zone has a main post office from which all mail in that area is distributed.
The system is similar to the 'zip code' system in the USA, although there are some practical differences in how the code is used. Jamaica actually put in a 'ZIP code' system recently but most people are not aware of it. In the new system, each of the 7 characters refers to a specific area. Eg. Country Code, Parish, district, postal zone.
"JMAAW08" would have a specific meaning to a Postal worker, but probably wouldn't sound as good in a Bob Marley song. |
