My favorite lines to avoid the higher scale is Disney and Royal Caribbean. Disney is a little more expensive than Royal Caribbean, but their service is top notch. You will receive top of the line service, for a great price, yet still be with a fun crowd. Royal Caribbean is also great, their ships are amazing, a lot of fun. Both lines are great for families, so you won't see as many couples on board, although both lines are great for couples as well.
Carnival is also going to be less formal than the other lines. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the line. They are OK. But it is a big party ship, with lots of drinking and things like that, not really my type of atmosphere, so I prefer to avoid them. Most of the lines above Disney are going to attract a slightly older, more formal/sophisticate crowd. If you are not used to this type of situation, it can be a little uncomfortable.
But I think that both Royal Caribbean and Disney sound perfect for you. From what you are saying in your description, you want a little class, not too much, but you don't mention much about drinking and things like that, so I think these would be perfect for you.
This link is great to learn about more ports: http://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/index.cfm
Also, be sure to find yourself a good agent to help you. They really can be great as far as getting good deals and things. Even if they aren't able to save money, their knowlede is really, really helpful.
Hope this helps, have a great time! |

I wouldn't do Carnival. I've been on it many times and they don't seem to change much over the years. I don't know how they would expect to keep repeat travelers if the routine seems pretty much the same (ie. onboard activities, cuisine, etc.) If you're a first time cruiser, you may enjoy it. There are some nice cruises on Windjammer for 13 days which visit the Caribbean. They have a laid back atmosphere which you may be interested in. I believe they cost a little more than say Carnival, but you get a better vacation. |
