What is a "Real Trini"??? |
Ok everybody put on yuh thinking caps for dis one. I have lived in the states since the age of six. I was born in POS, I have lived in John John and on the Beetham( yes I'm sooo hood). I been back to TnT many times so I would not say I am out of touch. With alot of the Trinis abroad it always seems like there is a competition to see who is more Trini(lol). Who does still walk in the house backwards at night or who does use callaloo bush instead of spinach for callaloo? I eat my roti with a fork(I am not ashamed) and I do not like pone and boy do I get rediculed. So in you definition what makes a true Trini? Is it what's in your heart or is it a lifestyle?
Additional Details
Callaloo bush only became plentiful in the US within the last ten years and it still depends on where you live if you can get it. Alot of Trinis use spinach to substitute cause back in the 80s when I first came to the States you could not get your hands on it unless someone was planning on coming to see you from Trinidad and they were willing to hide it in their suitcase from customs. Alot of people say it still taste the same but the color is a little brighter. |

Well imho, you don't HAVE to like pone to be a true Trini.
Secondly, the main reason for walking backwards into yuh house is because yuh don't want the "spirit" that yuh feel was following yuh on yuh way home, to come inside with yuh rite? My thing is, if the "spirit" was following yuh rite, then when yuh reach yuh door and going inside, yuh turn round to go in backwards............. yuh coming face tuh face with the dam "spirit" then?? And since when ah "spirit" need to " walk through ah door if it want to come behind yuh"???
Nex ting, I think it would make more sense to use "callaloo bush" to make callaloo ent?
As for the roti......yuh eva see somebody with long fingernails eat ah roti with they hand.........ewww. I don't see nothing wrong with using ah fork at all, hand or fork, it ending up in the same place, yuh belly!
So all in all, being a real/true Trini is about what's in your heart, if when yuh visit yuh homeland and yuh cyar wait to get off the plane to see what's new or what's still the same, yuh is a true Trini, and if when is time to leave yuh trying to grab and carry all the things yuh love from Trini because yuh cyar get it wherever yuh going, yuh is ah real Trini.

A true trini is one who will bad talk the country, Government, Opposition, citizens, food, culture, sport groups and every thing else.
But the moment they get on a plane, that same country becomes the best place on earth, the food becomes the best tasting, the people the most friendly. the Flag becomes a must in their home. and anything that come straight from Trinidad does be the best you can get.
They bragging about Soca and Calypso and willing to purchase an original of a CD to give a friend.
A copy of the Naparima Girls Cook book is at the top of their list of things to purchase when the "come home".
They know ALL the local folklore, sayings and knows couyah (sp.) mouth is the best way to point.
Generally a true trini is anyone who absolutely loves every thing about being Trinidadian...be it good, bad or ugly.

WOW....what is a real trini! How do you define that! I could just add some traits...like, we turn everything into a big lime, fete (even if is good or bad circumstances... yuh hadda take a drink for that). It ent have nobody in the world that could cook better than yuh mudder. When annoyed by a person, hearing some dotish talk, or yuh team just get at a goal a in the "rukuh kuh tunkoon" ah trini will buss ah Hard Steups and some cuss. And after all the ole talk, bad talk, vex bout who win government, what area yuh from, race, religion, crime etc...a true trini will put you in yuh place the moment you bad mouth their country! |
