The Dominican Republic for me was a true learning experience. I had a really good time there and I can't wait to go back. That being said I'll give you the whole truth about what I can sum up about the Dominican Republic.

The people in the D.R. are warm and energetic fast talkers who love to party and have a good time. They drive like maniacs so if you plan to rent a car there your defensive driving skills need to be way up to par since people drive all over the top of the white lines and a street that is four lanes will suddenly develop an extra imaginery lane once dominicans start squeezing there cars in between one another and driving them all over the road. The people there are mostly a mixture of black and white due to the intermingling of Spanish conquistadores and African slaves. You will see the most beautiful people in the world ranging from skin white as snow to as black as coal and everything in between. There is no doubt however that the cultural identity is Latino, very festive and upbeat and reflected in the merengue, mambo, and bachata music you will hear blarring out of the speakers. Also don't go to the D.R. expecting a tiny little island. It really takes time to see the Dominican Republic and roads are treacherous so you will need patience and time. Also the impression that you get of the island depends greatly on what region you visit. For instance in Santo Domingo you will find a bustling city with nightlife, where you can stroll along the malecon which is an ocean front drive lined with restaurants hotels and condo's or hang out in El Conde or the Zona Colonial and visit historical sites. If you are the more adventurous type of tourist I would recommend going to Santo Domingo which probably is a little less touristy than other parts of the island like Punta Cana, Playa Bavaro, and Puerto Plata. I stayed in Santo Domingo and went on a day outting to Punta Cana and spent five hours driving those bumpy roads just to be disappointed when I arrived in Punta Cana since there is nothing there but huge resorts that look like compouds with private beaches that are pretty much blocked off from the general public. If you are the all inclusive vacationer that wants to be surrounded by other Americans "gringos" and a staff that will talk to you in english then this type of resort is the place for you. If you want to really interact with the people of the Dominican Republic I recommend that you get out be adventurous and hit the road and try to mix up your itenerary like I did. All in All the D.R. is a great place to visit. It is also a very poor country and like the rest of Latin America things are very "disorganized" and informal compared to the U.S. standards of life. Just remember what I told you about driving. If you are disturbed by how people run red lights and don't pay attention to the white line markings on the road then this might not be the country for you. If you can manage to leave your American concept of life back in the U.S. and go with an open mind you will have a good time. I wont promise you'll fall in love with the place. It's not Hawaii by any means so don't expect that typical resort paradise. The D.R. I stress is a poor country and is not a part of the U.S. You will find beautifl five star resort accomadations there but that will end pretty much one you walk out of that resort. When you walk into the real culture to the D.R. you are bound to be surprised, a bit startled, and at times thrilled. If nothing more you will walk away satisfied after having met a bunch of happy go lucky people who seem to make the best out of life in the D.R. even though sometimes life on that island can be pretty inconvenient. Good luck. Go with an open mind and enjoy the trip!

To me it is the best place in the whole wide world. I go there every summer because im dominican. The beaches are buetiful. Most of the stores are in La Capital. which is the capital of the Dominican Republic which is Santo Domingo. The best resorts are there. Lots of good foods. Lots of attractions and waterparks. One of my favorite one is Agua Splash. A park that is really good to go to is El Malecon it is very buetiful and it is by the oceons. I provided some links for resorts and hotels so you can stay any wear in the dominican republichttp://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-191501677-dominican_republic_hotels-i;_ylc=X3oDMTFlOTZkamRzBF9TAzI3NjY2NzkEX3MDOTY5NTUzMjUEc2VjA3NzcC1ob3RlbARzbGsDdGl0bGU-

I have been there twice and my parents have been there 6 times. We all LOVE it there! The beaches are AH-MAZING and everything is great down there! I wouldn't really recommend leaving the resort the first time down there unless you are with a tour group or something. Lots of the domincan guys will hit on you because they are trying to get out of the country and stuff but you just have to ignore them. You get a super nice tan there! (Which is great) But, yeah...overall: its awesome!! Punta Cana is the BEST!

Punta Cana is beautiful with white beaches and is more expensive. Saona island is paradise in my opinion. Puerto plata has brown sandy beaches
