For your first visit to the Dominican Republic, I suppose you want to go to the beach, but also discover the country. If yes then the only good solution is Puerto Plata (more than 30 hotels/resorts to chose from.) You have Riu's (3) Iberostar,
Marien Oasis, Casa Colonial (5+) Sun Village, Hacienda Resort, Gran Ventana, Blue Bay, and many more....

I went to the DR last Feb and stayed in Puerto Plata. The hotel was nice, all inclusive, no beach. My advice to you is to check how far your hotel is from the airport. We didn't and ended up flying into Santiago and driving 2 hours on a bus to out hotel ( DR is all back roads!)
We also took a catamaran ride.. and got very sick! Had to have a water taxi come $20 american money EACH to get off...
I did not enjoy Puerto Plata but have heard good things about Punta Cana. Good luck!

in la romana.. the venta club.. or grand dominicus.. a beautiful place to be with wonderful meals and entertainment... also i recomment the sona island trip on the catamaran.. you go on the catamaran to sona island... eat a nice spagetti diner on the island.. swim if you want... drink rum all you want.... and then return by speed boat.. that is a thrilling time i think of it often....at the hotel the venta club dont exchange your money there.. when you arrive at the airport.. in santo domingo there is an exchange there.. in the airport. and you will get the right reight.. i guess you would be better off takin a airline to he la romana airport.. then you are only a short distance from the hotel..you will love the landskaping... that is the only trip i recomment... stay away from the towns. the local people will rob you... the police will rob you... there are other trips on motor cycles the four wheel kind ..and a tour to san domingo city.. i dont recomment this.. the people will stop at a lot of shops and the pedillers will attack you with a lot of plastic jewelery..i recommend buying coffee the bean kind in the grocery store.. also in san pedro de marcus there is a rum factory on independenca street.. you will get a quart of aged rum for five dollars us.... cheaper with pesos or euros.. if you go there add your purchase up yourself the owner does not know how to add ok gilermo.

we stayed at the occidental grand flamenco in punta cana it was nice but nothing special we did not think much of the Dominican Republic its very built up now and we did have tummy trouble whilst there also did not feel that safe off the resort.
We went to Cuba this was amazing and a much much nicer caribbean island infact its my favourite place so far.

I have stayed in Tropical Princess in Punta Cana 3 times and in LTI Punta Cana 1 time. Both hotels are very nice, very good food, perfect beaches. Tropical Princess and Caribe Club Princess which are 2 hotels in one have larger grounds and more stuff to do. Friends of mine went to Grand Oasis and they loved it - it is also in Punta Cana.
Punta Cana has the best beaches of all the DR.

And in December the weather will be perfect!

I went to Puerto Plata in December and we stayed at the Gran Ventana.

It was very clean (very very well kept). The staff were great. Entertaining, polite, communicated very well.

Saw very little bugs!!!

I cannot say alot about the beach as we arrived at the beginning of Tropical Storm Olga, so the beach was quite a mess do to all the blowing and rain and whatnot. The water was nice though. Not as crystal clear blue as we expected, but once again that was becuase there was a Tropical Storm. I am sure in most cases it is a beautiful beach.

It is located very close to the mall. There are 2 bars about a 2 minute walk away and another about a 20 minute walk.

The food was fantastic and the drinks were great too!!

They were very accomodating.

I have not stayed at this resort in the Dominican but I have stayed at this chain in other countries.
RIU Palace.
These resorts are wonderful! You will be pampered there! You won't want to leave.

I went to Punta Cana in November of 2007. We stayed at the Paradisus Palma Real. It was so unbelievably nice! I had such a great time, the people, resort hotel, spa, pool, cocktails and everything was really great. The foot was okay, but it didn't bother me a bit. We went on the catamaran one day, watched beach Olympics another day, and walked down the beach to a small market they had. The market was okay, but on the other side of the resort were these two locals who were selling jewelry and shells. We bought a bunch of stuff from them and they even cracked open a coconut for me. If you want pictures, just let me know. I would suggest this resort to anyone. I hope you have a great time!
