I have been to Punta Cana and very much enjoyed it. However, if you are going to be staying at an all-inclusive resort, such as the Barcelo, please don't "tip" the employees money. They are required to "turn in" any cash money given to them. Instead "tip" them with packages of gum (which they love) or markers and other small items. Please feel free to bring all of your nail polishes and "gift" them to the maids - they love them. Also, please bring any baby clothes you may have and give them to a pregnant maid. A friend did this and later found a gathering of the maids ooohhing and aaahhing over the baby clothes. Also, pack some school supplies such as pads of paper, pens and pencils, crayons, markers etc. and make arrangements to go to a local school and "donate" these items. They are desperate for them. DO NOT allow someone to "deliver them for you". They won't - they will sell them. Keep in mind that if you bring candy for the school children they only go to school half a day so bring two bundles of candy. Go to the dollar store and pick up items. Believe me - the smile you will get and the obvious appreciation will make your effort very worthwhile. Besides - you should always save extra room in your suitcase for the return trip home for all of your extra purchases and by doing this it will ensure that you have extra room. My daughter and I had brought about 10 different bottles of fingernail polish and on the day of checkout it was a treat to just wander around finding maids cleaning a room and just hand them a bottle with a smile. One last piece of advise - don't drink the water, don't eat any fruit or vegetable that you have not washed yourself - includes lettuce! Leaving a pack of gum or magic marker in the in-room refrigerator will ensure an overstocking of beverages. Also leave something in the bathroom and on the night stand. You will be amazed at the service and if you need any extras they will be more than happy to get them for you. The empoyees ususally live right on the compound any little item is appreciated. But they do love their gum! I once had someone ask me why I go out of my way to "tip" at an all-inclusive. These people have so little that the pleasure I get out of seeing them smile can't begin to explain it. Besides, the last trip was a gift to my daughter for graduating college and it taught her a lot about how spoiled we really are. And if you can learn a few words of their language they will really appreciate it. Have a great time. |

Please do not go to puerto plata, go to Punta Cana if you go to puerto plata you will get bitten alive with sand flies I did, aslo found it pretty horrible compared to Punta Cana. The people seem alot friendlier in Punta Cana, the seas are cleaner and the whole area is nicer. Also if you go to Punta Cana you can visit manati park and swim with the dolphins, a most wonderful experience, ive been a total of 4 times to the Dominican 3 PC and once PP, going again in December, but never again to PP.. |

Just came backfrom Punta Cana (Iberostar Bavaro - hotel). It was awesome! The people there are super nice and friendly. The beaches are gorgeous and that hotel has cabanas you can use on the beach. The night shows are the best! Definitely great place to go. |

I have been to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Santa Domingo and La Romana in the Dominican Republic. Puerto Plata is nice since you have mountain and the beach-it is breath taking. But I must say I like Punta Cana the best. The waters are clearer and there is more to do. We love to snorkel and we also found it is better in Punta Cana. |
