What is the cheapest tropical country/island to live in?

Specifically somewhere to buy a house and live in. We want somewhere safe and tropical, but inexpensive, preferably a country with a sea shore, but we don't neccesarily have to live by the ocean.

English is the prefered language, followed by French and then Spanish but we can deal with just about anything.

Barbados is a good place to live since so much stars come here to live. if you can afford it then you can come also but many people say that it is a luxurious destination. It is not so for me because i know hoe to shop. It along with many other Caribbean island have a seashore. It is relatively safe although we still have some crime here and we speak English along with some dialect.

Not an island, but try Belize.English is the language, the dollar is accepted, and their diving and reefs are among the world's best.

The Dominican Republic is becoming a real hot spot for retiring Canadians, but if you want a house you have to live in a gated community. Most Ex-patriots live in condos and can get by on about $1000/month including eat out for most meals. If you bought a house it wound be more like $2000/month and you'd have to put down a lot on the property. You don't need much Spanish to get by down there.

Nicaragua might be a good choice. It is the only Caribbean country I've been to where a waiter ran after us to give back his tip, not realising that it was for him! There are some lovely Colonial cities where life is very pleasant, or you could go for somewhere more rural. http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/living/livingabroadin/living_abroad_immigration_and_visas_in_nicaragua.shtml

Someone mentioned that very lovely country, Belize, but sadly that is a country which people are leaving at the moment because of the violence.

If you don't have to actually make a living there, just about ANY decent Caribbean island will work for you.. try Antigua, Tobago, Bequia and St. Kitts but if you have to work, then you may have a problem since most Caribbean islands have an unemployment rate of 40 percent to 50 percent so you CAN'T WORK THERE.

I heard Bermuda is a very cheap place to live. A friend went there for a vacation and she said she barely ever paid a dime.
