What is the cheapest way to call US from a Jamaican hotel?

We are going to Jamaica for a vacation and I was wondering what was the cheapest way to call US from Jamaican hotel.
Are there any calling cards for calls from Jamaica? Where can I get them ? Is there some other way ?

thank you in advance

Do not call from you hotel room. They charge you an arm and a leg, even if you do not get through it is like a dollar just for dialing. If you plan on calling home alot, go to a gas staion and buy a Digicell phone. They are a pre-paid cell phones that cost around $30-40 US. If you run out of minutes, which you shouldn't buy a Digicell phone card. If you use you cell phone from home like us (verizon) it was 1.50 a minute. Any cab driver will be able to get you to a place that sells them.

I was there last month and was able to call the US with my Cingular cell phone. Price was $1.99 / minute. Also, not all of their phones will work there so you have to check. It is highly recommended that you not use the hotel phones to call back.

Shout really really loudly.

I think my cell phone worked there. Some do, some don't.

Use a World talk card

The cheapest way is to get one of those prepaid cell phones and put some minutes on it. That way you don't have to pay thier rates. You don't want to get over there and have to pay a huge amount on making phone calls. You want to be able to enjoy your trip. Good luck and have fun. Stay away from the Ganja.

There are a couple of options.

Your easiest bet would be to buy a card there at the island. Jamaica along with a couple of islands out there use a specific carrier out there called Cable & Wireless. They monopolize most all of the phones on these islands, therefore cards like AT&T just wont work.

2 cards you can buy in the states that supposedly will work from Jamaica are Ambassador phone card and WorldTalk phone card.

The Ambassador card runs 40 cents a minute
about the same price as cards on the Island

I could not find rates for the WorldTalk card

Cheapest Route - Give your family members the hotel phone number - the lowest rate to Jamaica from the US is the STI Mundo card at 2 cents a minute with no connection fees. You will get 200-250 minutes of calls on a $5 card.

Both of these cards can be found at www .star69. net

FYI: do not attempt do make a collect call from Jamaica with your credit card under any circumstances. They do not follow the same laws as they do in the states with Network Access Fees, unless you really want to pay 8 to 10 dollars a minute.

Have fun and bring your sunscreen!

Skype from an internet portal (assuming the other end has Skype too).

Don't call from the hotel....last time I did that it was $30 a minute and that was over 5 years ago. Thankfully I only talked for a minute. There are many calling centers where you can call the US from Jamaica for a reasonable fee. They are usually at internet cafes. Any of the prepaid cell phones might be cheaper if you find or know someone who already has one and you can buy a card for them and use their phone. To buy the phone itself may cost you around $50 US.

A credit card. As soon as the people in the next room go out to enjoy the beach, take your credit card and jimmy their door open. Use THEIR phone for free and then go enjoy the beach with them!!

Check with your cell phone carrier and see if they have service in that area. If they do, you may be able to get temporary service. We did this going on vacation.

If you can afford a vacation to Jamaica then you shouldn't be worrying about the few dollars it costs to make a phone call. Are you a cheapskate?

Buy a world talk calling card, and use the phone in your room. A Jamaican $300 should be sufficient for about 12 minutes

I wouldn't call from the hotel. In the Carribean they have calling stations where the call is placed for you & then you pay when your call is completed. My boyfriend worked on a cruise ship & this was the least expensive way to place calls.
