What is the cost of living in Jamaica? |
We're moving there this summer and I wanted to get an idea of how much it costs for the basics : Groceries, housing (rent/buy) 4 bedroom in Negril. Anything else you could think of would be helpful. Thanks in advance! |

the responses are true, negril is very high, even for the people who work in the service industry there. and they know how and where to spend their money and they don't even live in negril proper.
you must have the place where you will be staying picked out already, if not you should have that worked out before you leave if it is not ur first visit. and rent will run you some, cuz you probably will stay in a gated community like, point village or out in orange bay or some other place with round the clock security. maybe US$1200 a month probably more for four bedrooms.
as for food, i would go to green island on market day and buy furits and veggies from there, or go to savlamar (much further) and food shop there for everything, meat and groceries if you can. ask when is the best day to got to market in these places. the HI-LO supermarket in negril is for tourists and kinda high, but plenty of selection, foreign or domestic or go to the other supermarket in the other plaza (forget the name) where the jamaicans who live in the area shop for food.
electricity, don't run the a/c too much and keep the hot water use to minimum, and as for the (hot) water bill, grab a bar of soap everytime it rains hard and take a shower, lol.
but a summer in JA will be paradise once you get the hang of it!!! people are nice and everything criss, man. |

Sorry to inform you that I don't know, but my friend just came back from Jamaica after spending two weeks, and she said that to have fun for two weeks, I'd have to bring at last $1000, I laughed at her and asked, "1000 what kind of dollars???" to which she responded, "US" of course. Jamaica is not the cheapest place to live, but then it all depends on what you plan to do, how you plan to eat, and how you plan to live your life. I am Jamaican, and for some reason, i don't know why, I think you have to have a good amount of money stored up to live in Negril, I just have this crazy idea that Negril is expensive, so that is one of the towns that you have to have money to live. I may be wrong, and very well accept that fact. You may need to find out a bit more. It's sad to say, but Jamaica's economy is poor, and hopefully, soon there'll be a change. Like I said, you have to know what you are getting yourself into, are you planning on living there for the rest of your life, or do you just want to be there for the summer? Are you planning on doing a little clothes shopping? Are you planning to indulge in the party life? You have to figure this all out before you go. One more thing before I depart, my mother was telling me of one of her friends who went to the shop (corner store) to buy 1 pound of salt, the shopkeeper, said it was $300, the lady looked at the shopkeeper and said "I said I want ONE pound of SALT....I want salt" the shopkeeper said, " yeah, and that's $300." And I believe Jamaica is just like America in terms of different states have different prices for an item... This lady lives in St. Catherine, in the country, and if salt is so much, imagine in Negril.
I hope this helps :) |

Hey I've worked in Negril for about a year and a half and it was by far the most expensive town I've been in Jamaica and I've been around so I should know ?Why do you want to live in Negril ?Well to rent a house would probably run you at least $2500 to $3000 USD /month in Negril.Groceries could run about $1000 to $1500 USD/month.Electricity and Water could run you about $500 to $1000 USD.So you do the math.I think it would be better if you looked for a house to buy but because of the location it could be pretty pricy but you should look never the less you might just find a deal.I would rather pay a mortage of $3000 knowing that at the end of the day I can sell the place and make a profit than just give someone $3000 to put in their pocket every month. |

You should be able to find a decent townhouse in Kingston for $1000-1200/mth (US$).I'm not sure about Negril. |
