There is little or no crime in Cuba basically because it's all misery. Ever since I was a little kid, I would walk from Santo Suarez to El Malecon which is more than ten blocks with no problem and I was around six years old. I knew everybody and everybody knew my family and I. Just DON'T WEAR ANYTHING VALUABLE! I visited Cuba in 2004 to see my family again and I was at a red light in a car with my father and out of nowhere, comes a skinny guy and yanks his golden chain right off his neck and starts running. The only reason why that guy stole that chain is to sell it and buy food. Hope this was helpful.

Very little is reported and certain laws would not be considered crime elsewhere (ie speaking out against the government) but violent crime is rare. The major amount of crime is probably related to the tourism industry because as Willie Sutton, the famous bank robber said "that's where the money is". Prostitution and drugs are probably the big two there.

Not as bad as in the major cities in the U.S. and much safer than Washington D.C. I was there a couple years ago and none of us in a group of 30, had any problems. I feel safer there than in the states. If they steal something of value, who are they going to sell it to since most don't have money so it is obvious that they probably stole it and can't account for it.
The criminals there dont have all the rights like ours do and cant get away with like ours do. There crimes are petty.

Cuba is considered free from any threat of global terrorism, but has an increasing crime rate. Visitors are warned that theft from baggage during handling is common, and valuables should not be packed in suitcases. Be wary of pickpockets and bag snatchers in major tourist sites and on buses or trains. Crime is on the increase and visitors should be particularly careful after dark in Havana; on 29-30 October 2005 there were two incidents in Centro Habana at about 2am, where foreign nationals were stabbed and robbed, and visitors are advised to take taxis after dark rather than walk.

However, it is not any less safe than anywhere else you may travel to.

I would say just like any destination, at a petty level, the locals are penalized when stealing and when things do happen they are dealt with on an individual basis depending on how big the crime / theft was.......it's hard to say, Mexico , the Caribbean and all over faces such crimes......Hell I'm heading to Barcelona and all I've read is the pickpocket theft is out of control , so from that everywhere you go you will have crime and theft etc....you just have to be educated as to how to keep your wits about you when traveling.

=)
