Peso and the exchange is a joke. Their peso is rated very high for a country in absolute peril and total poverty.

Cuban Peso. ( The convertible peso (sometimes given as CUC$) (informally called a chavito), is one of two official currencies in Cuba, the other being the peso. It has been in limited use since 1994, when it was treated as equivalent to the U.S. dollar.)

Riki
tourists use the Convertible Peso (CUC) it has no value outside Cuba nor can it be purchased outside Cuba. Cubans use the Cuban Peso. Check the sites below for more info and approximate conversion rates.

i think it's peso

We use a double currency. The traditional peso and the supposedly convertible currency, similar to the foreign hard currency

The Cuban currency is the peso. There's two kinds of currencies over there now and the peso is what most of the natives use while tourists use the dollar version of the peso.

There is the national money used by Cubans and then the convertible peso (CUC) which gets a very bad exchange rate.

1 Canadian dollar = 70 convertible peso cents
1 CUC = about 24 National pesos

Tourists are always charged in CUCs and end up paying 5 times more. Venues frequented by tourist automatically charge in convertibles. You can sometimes insist to pay in "national money" and national prices when buying "street food" or at a venue frequented by locals.

Cuba has two currencies, the Cuban Peso, and the Cuban Convertible Peso.

Most of Cuba's inhabitants are very poor and have to survive on the Cuban Peso, and the state ration shops!
The Cuban Convertible Peso, was invented for the tourism industry, and people employed in it are paid in Cuban Pesos and Cuban Convertible Pesos.
Tourists must make sure that any change from their travellers cheques,or travel money, is paid in Cuban Convertible Pesos, as Cuban Pesos are worthless!
So in effect Cuba has created a two tier economy, with people employed in the tourism industry much better off than most of the population, and of course all tips from tourists are again in Cuban Convertible Pesos.
