Aruba is too Americanized for me but if you want that, then go for it. Very middle class, no begging or poverty.

Barbados was very British in attitude and I would go back.

St. Martin is the easiest island and the best for me and my wife. Excellent French food and pastry. Attitude is laid back and not crazy. If you are into topless or nude family vacations go to Orient beach.

Although you will see some trash and the cities are a little dumpy in areas, driving is pretty easy and shopping is good.

The most obnoxious thing we have encountered are timeshare people on motorbikes and that is rare. Water is wonderful and clean. Airport is modern. People are mixed with a lot of white French and Dutch, so if you are looking for friendly people this is the place. No snobby waiters. Most people speak English. The dollar is accepted most places.

it depends on what your definition of civilized is
st barts is really high class and exclusive
nevis has a 100% tax on everything that enters the country and is full of old people from england
st martin is probs the best one its cheep for an island depends again on which side you live on french or dutch its full of tourists so its lots of fat people in snadles you really have to go there and see what you think of it

If "civilized" means affluent... that would be St. Barts/St. Kitts... lots of mulit-millionairs on those islands. I live on Antigua for about 7 months a year and it's a very nice island. I also love Bequia... probably one of the prettiest islands in the Caribbean...

Yahoo GIVES you a good list of islands in the Caribbean to avoid... it's that list of islands on the right side of the screen... because those are the islands AmeriKans seem to think are great places to go in the Caribbean... so AVOID ANY ISLAND ON THAT LIST... and go to the really PRETTY and SAFE and UP MARKET islands in the Caribbean... and let the AmeriKans go to Jamaica and the Virgin Islands
