Depends on many factors. fidel began his revolution screaming that they were going to solve the problem of housing, which was insufficient at the time, but the population has doubled and the building of new houses has not been at the necessary level.
Areas like Habana Vieja, are collapsing, supported only by wooden beams. Despite that, once in a while the buildings fall
Repairing is very difficult. You can obtain materials by "solving" as we say. Don't ask where did I got them
I worked in a rural country side area, and at the outskirts of the town there were several buildings, which, when I left they were practically in the same condition as when I arrived
In Cuba typically the building of something suffers many delays because we run out of this or that
Traveling gave a very accurate description of the situation in general. The comunist government gives its own statistics, which typically are always good ( and false ).
As somebody once said, after reading the newspapers: "If everything goes so good, then why everything is so bad ?" |

Hello Dear
A severe housing shortage in Cuba was worsened by two hurricanes that left another 440,000 homes on the island in dire condition
Experts say the task is so overwhelming that Cuba is unlikely ever to accomplish it. Too many structures were lost in a country that already had thousands of people living in temporary and substandard shelter. People simply have to make do.
Even before the storm, the Cuban government press said the national housing deficit was 600,000 units, up from 530,000 five years ago. The government boasted of building 110,000 houses last year, then acknowledged that they had not even come close
Best of Luck |

As somebody has already said, it depends on many factors. Most houses are made of concrete and brick
In the countryside the peasants build their houses with wood
The problem is to maintain them. |

In Cuba, usually, even before fidel there was a shortage of houses, and was one of the things that fidel promised when he seized power, but, as usual, he didn't fulfilled it
I am a physician, and I knew other doctors who lived in "barbacoas", home made divisions of houses with a tall ceiling. You build a floor at certain height and make a room ( sort of ).
When the Mariel, in the 1980s, you could see houses practically wrecked, with the emigration seal on the door, indicating that the owners had left . That is a very clever way that fidel has been using.
When people leave the country, their houses are given to the ruling elite, but still it does not cover the needs
Oh, excellent! As usual some people are trying to present Cuba under a dreamy, wonderful image that doesn't fit with reality.
Why some foreigners insist on talking about what they say is happening at the neighbor's house ? They should talk about their own countries, which I suppose have problems as well.
I must say that TRAVELING has given a very correct, precise and accurate picture of the houses in Cuba.
Well said ! |

Some are in acceptable conditions, but most are not.
When fidel began, he promised to solve the situation of houses. but the population has doubled and the houses, well, let's not go there.
Most houses are in deplorable condition. There are no repair materials and when you find them are very expensive because they are black market
Some people, like those that work for the State Security, have access to many things that the comon cuban cannot obtain. What was called "the new class" you know |

Yeah, it depends on where you live. The town where I lived in was very poor and the houses were made out of wood...yeah that was very sad to see. However, there's a lot of beautiful places to go to. |

It depends where one lives. I've seen some houses that are very small with limited space for families living in there. And then there are homes that of average size for a family. Some raise animals and farm at their homes too.
Within the past few years decades, Cuban housing has begun to catch up to population demand. Nearly 1.3 million housing units were built between 1959 and 1993. In the 1980s, over half of all housing units were detached houses. The remainder were apartments, palm huts called hohios, and cuarterias, housing units in buildings composed of a number of detached rooms where occupants share some or all facilities. More than half of all dwellings were concrete and brick, about one-third were solid wood, and a smaller number were constructed with palm planks. Water was piped indoors to roughly half of all homes and outside to one-fifth; about half had private bath facilities. Housing conditions have generally improved over the past few years. By 1998, about 87% of urban dwellings were graded as Good or Fair, as were 68% of rural dwellings.
Though most dwellings are built by the state, there are a few cooperative and individual concerns represented in the market. Habitat-Cuba, a non-government organization, has been working with local architects and low-income families to provide quality, low-cost housing. Part of this program involves using indigenous and more easily renewable materials for construction, such as clay and bamboo.
Although about half a million homes have been destroyed in the hurricanes this past year. So that is now a big problem.
The homes are well taken care of even though many do not have much. Those who have casas particulares (like a b&b/room/apt. renting) are roomy, clean and have proper amenities. These homes are right in Cuban residence neighbourhoods.
