If you are looking for a place for relaxation, St. Croix.
If you are looking for a place to snorkel, St. Croix.
If you are looking for a place that attracts alot of tourists, St. Thomas.

St. Thomas is more touristy, and more developed than the St. Croix.

St. Croix is bigger, but can be a bit boring. There's some good beaches there, and a casino.

Whichever one you choose, between St. Croix, and St. Thomas, you can always take the ferry or seaplane from one island to the other, just to get a sense of what the other island has to offer. You can spend the day on the other island.

Overall, I would recommend St. Thomas.

I haven't been to St. John as yet.

I enjoyed St. Thomas, and then a short ferry trip over to St. Johns for a visit to the National Park and beach there.

St John is the smallest, but has absolutely the most fabulous beaches.

St John is the smallest of the USVI and I think it has the best beaches. The reason being is 75% of the island is preserved as a national park. Not many resorts lining the beaches of St John.
In fact there are only 2 big resorts on the island. Caneel Bay and the Westin. There are also quite few smaller properties to stay at. But many visitors rent homes/villas on the island. It's a quiet island and most go there to relax, snorkel, dive, hike and explore.

St Thomas has many more large resorts. It's a much more active island with more shopping and restaurants. More activities on this island. St Thomas is more cosmopolitan with nightlife and resort action.

St Croix has nice beaches and not as built up as St Thomas. The big draw is Buck island. Beautiful island to snorkel and enjoy the aquamarine and cobalt waters.

It depends what you are looking for. It's all good. Stay a few days on each island.

Good Luck and enjoy)
