What kind of prices can I expect on my trip to Cuba?

I'm staying at an all-inclusive resort, so my food and lodging will be taken care of. I'm just wondering what sorts of prices to expect when buying a cigar or a bottle of Havana Club. I was a bit disappointed to find out how highly valued the Convertible Peso is against the Canadian Dollar, and now I'm worried that my expectations of inexpensive rum were unrealistic. How much do typical Cuban items, like rum and cigars, cost in Convertible Pesos?

Difficult to know. As you know, in Cuba things depend on what fidel ( and perhaps the little brudder ) decides.

Usually they need foreign currency to pay their expenses and keep their regime alive

A small bottle of Havana Club costs 1.90 Convertible Pesos.

The Cdn. dollar is down right now however you will still be able to buy Havana Club for a bout a third of what you would pay for a premium rum in Canada. Cigars depend on the quality of course but still a fraction of what you would pay for Cuban cigars in Canada. I just returned from my 10th visit and didn't really notice that much difference from previous years.

rum is 4pesos
cigars 1-5peso depending on size for the cohibas

bar men in the hotels sell the real stuff for a hell of a lot cheaper!

Beardo
The standard white rum is CUC 3.85 for 70 cl, the 7 year aged rum about CUC 11. Other brands are cheaper.

Acceptable white rums can be found for CUP 57 (i.e. CUC 2.40).

I agree with Riki.
Don't worry much about the price. You won't get gouged even with the exchange rate. The airports carry better prices than the resorts for alcohol (from my personal experience). Rum ranges from about $4 CUC to maybe maximum of $30 CUC (but some other alcohols are actually that expensive...the rums would be less)...the more expensive the rum, the more aged and higher quality. In the airport, there are liqueur bottles that are really good that cost about $2.50 CUC. Very much worth it.

If you like coffee, the Cubita coffee (beans) are excellent quality. A huge bag is about $12 CUC and lasts a good while.

All the other souvenirs (wood crafts, leather, etc) are of excellent quality and great prices even still with the lower CAD dollar.

Just be careful where you get some of your items. If they're not from a store, you could be getting ripped off from originals (even if they seem to be cheaper)...and would be illegal.

Enjoy your time in Cuba.
