What must i do to live in Puerto Rico?? I am a U.S. citizen.?

I would be living there but with my work i will be working all over the US and possibly in other country's for extended periods of time. So my main questions are will my home/items be safe left alone. Also what kind of "state" taxes will i have to pay?? And can i just pick up and buy a house there?

Yes you can move there with no problem. PR is a US commonwealth & all puerto ricans are US citizens. You can buy a house there. If you live there full time you will not have property taxes, if you are not full time then you will have property taxes. Jobs are hard to find, so if you have one that you can continue doing, then you will be fine. You will not need to pay any federal income tax, unless you work for the US govt. But you will still be taxed the full US social security & medicaid taxes. Puerto Rico has "state" taxes & sales taxes but they are smaller than US states. Also you will No longer be able to vote for the US president once you live in PR, no absentee ballots allowed. There are many billingual people in PR, more so in San Juan, but you will need to pick up some spanish. There are good areas & bad areas of PR. Just like in the US, the good areas will be more expensive to live in. Some nice areas of san Juan you can live in are Isla Verde, Ocean Park, some of Old San Juan. But San Juan is a city & you will have more risks here. Guaynabo is very nice. Parts of Dorado, Rincon, Fajardo & other areas have nice developements where you can live. Goodluck!

Everyone pretty much answered your question however, please note that there s a big community of US expats in the island living around the big towns. I am pretty sure you will quickly find others with your same situation.

Enjoy the Island!

You can move as there are no restrictions for U.S. citizens to move there. You will no longer be subject to U.S. Federal Income Tax (unless if you are in the military or work for the federal government) and you will have to pay Commonwealth Income Taxes. Crime is prevalent in many urban centers (just like it is in the USA). You can pick up and move there overnight and buy a home as long as you have the money. By moving to the island you lose your right to vote in national elections and must have a good command of Spanish to get around.

First of all Puerto Rican's are U.S citizens too so you have no restrictions. You can leave your stuff at home but it depends were you live. If you move to Condado (the rich part of town) It will be safe. Taxes you will have to pay (.0650%) in taxes per dolllar. You can buy a house if you have good credit

yes you things can stay there when you come back. the sales tax here are 7%.

Charlie
One more thing, you may want to house sitter while you are away, or have a prperty management comany overssee your house.

This is the sincere advice from the heart of a puertorrican dont go there.I left that island 15 years ago and will never regret it.USA is beautiful clean big and wayyyyy safer than Puerto Rico. There is so much to see here.I sincerely myself they have to kill me and I rather be dead than to return to Puerto Rico.I am being very very sincere.Puertorricans are very nice people the problem is the place, its sad.I see the reality and just think... Why do you think puertorricans are invading the USA all the time? no one in their right mind want to stay there.USA is the best enjoy it! God bless United States and its people. I will never regret coming here even though life has been really tough doesent matter I am here to stay great place and people!!! but well if you want to go still well go then but be very careful its very dangerous .I never felt safe there that is why I came here looking for peace. Thanks god I found it!!
