Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Samana, Santo Domingo are all good destinations. Punta Plata is the most popular tourist destination in the DR and offers all-inclusive resorts with unlimited drinks, food, and entertainment. Check out: http://www.macquil.com/articles/dominican.php for more information on the Dominican Republic
Punta Cana - http://www.macquil.com/articles/puntacana.php

Good luck!

Sosua on the north coast is the place to be. Check our yahoo group, lots of info and non commercial.

i just went in june. stay at the caribe club princess, in punta cana and you are guaranteed to have the best vacation you have ever had. resort staff is helpful and friendly, the resort itself is beautiful. beaches are amazing as is the wind surfing. you will never run out of things to do, whether you want to relax on the beach or go on atv tours, punta cana is the place to go.

First of all, steer well clear of the all-inclusives, and you'll be taking a step in the right direction. You will be restricted a bit by staying in the resort (limited exposure to people besides the guests), the food is monotonous in most after 3 days, and they have a very strict "guest" policy. Friends of mine stayed at one a few years back, and I couldn't even sit at the bar and have a drink with them without paying USD40 for the day.

Sosua/Cabarete area (near Puerto Plata) is good. There are lots of nice little hotels, bars and restaurants in both and you will have a lot of "action" going on in both. I actually think Cabarete is a bit better (prices are slightly higher) because all of the partying happens right on the beach, sosua is a bit more spread out. You can chip in and rent a villa as well as look for a decent hotel. I've stayed frequently at Sancoucci in Cabarete - it is right on the beach as well. The last time friends and I rented a villa in Perla Marina, which is a gated community between Cabarete and Sosua.

Boca Chica (near Santo Domingo) is also ok.

If you don't mind a bit of a ride (nice drive), try Las Terenas - there are also a lot of nice little places to stay, eat and drink and a good deal of partying.

Better yet, if you are going for 2 weeks you can spend the first few days near Sosua/Cabarete, then take a ride to Las Terenas for a few days, and then head back to Sosua/Cabarete for your last few days.

If your time is limited (ie: long weekend), go to Cabarete/Sosua. They are relatively close to the airport, and you can't do much wrong in either if you are looking for a good party.

I went to Santiago and had an amazing time. If you don't know Spanish and/or don't have local contacts I wouldn't really recommend it though.
