Of course you cannot go to Jamaica and not bring back some world famous Blue Mountain coffee (the best coffee I have personally tasted)! The Appleton Rum VX is a pretty smooth rum (if you drink). If you are not a drinker then there are tons of arts and craft items everywhere you go.
Avoid the upscale malls (there are a few in Negril, Ocho Rios, MOBAY and Kingston) because their prices are fixed and you cannot bargain them down. However, in the open-air markets and craft markets you can bargain with the vendors for an agreeable price. Never pay what they are asking at first, pay what you feel is a reasonable price for you and the seller. Remember they are trying to make a living so be fair about it after all the price they are asking is still cheaper than what you would buy it for in the US.
I have purchased a few Bob Marley T-shirts. Now for the good quality ones you would probably want to get that from one of the malls because they have the good ones. The best brands to buy are 'Zion' or 'Cooyah'. These are comparable to the big brands in the US. I have bought Zion and Cooyah brands and they do not shrink or fade.
This last July, I bought a really cool walking stick with carvings for a mere $25.00US. He was asking $50. The beaches on the resorts are public property accessible from the water or along the beach (even though the resort or hotel say its a beachfront property). The reason I mentioned this is because during the day one or two vendors come strolling along the beach selling their crafts (its all legal) and they mean no harm. You can get the best deals from these beach vendors (that's how I got the walking stick).
I have also purchased a couple of paintings, carvings and bamboo crafts. All for a very good price. Hey the Martha Brae river is a really cool bamboo-rafting experience! Try it out and take in some real tranquil and tropical Jamaican atmosphere.
Pretty much all souvenir and gift purchases are legal to bring back to the US. The supermarkets have the best deals on the various rums and the coffee. Avoid the ganga stuff. It is illegal to buy or possess it in jamaica as it is in the States. If a cop arrests you in Jamaica for ganga related activities they can get pretty tough and jail you, so play it safe kiddo!
Anyway, I hope this info helps. If you have anymore questions on Jamaica (like places to go or things to do), feel free to put an additional comment below your question above and I would gladly respond. Have a fun-filled jamaican experience!
Remember...everything there jus IRIE Mon! :) |

We just went to Jamaica about 2 months ago. The hand craved art is beautiful, and it's at a reasonable price. You have to talk them down of course, that was the fun part. Make sure you see the entire island, not just the rich areas, take a look at some of the inner city areas. You'll get a good look at reality. Have a safe and happy trip. |

We were there a few weeks ago and for gifts brought back rum cream and coffee. Rum cream is hard to find in the states. You can do your gift shopping at Mo Bay's airport duty free. |

You can pay the duty for rum. Wray and Nephew is really good!! (if you are old enough to buy it) The usual tshirts, bracelets are nice too. Earrings and possible a book of Jamaican Patois. A book by Louise Bennet called Jamaica Labrish. |

Most anything except drugs is legal to bring back to the US. Also, I don't think Cuban Cigars are allowed. I would also steer away from any kind of drug paraphenalia. There are some cool looking pipes even if you don't use but customs might not believe that and it could be a hassel.
FYI, when buying T-shirts in Jamaica watch the tag. Some "good" deals are to be had but they are usually 100% cotton. They will sometimes tell you they are pre-shrunk but they usually aren't and will shrink big time. Make sure you buy a blend.
One thing I like to bring back is Egg and Protein Shampoo found at the grocery store...or some unusal and tasty cookies that I sometimes find. I also like the Foska Oats Oatmeal. It just tastes better than what you buy here.
Then of course there is the usual Rum and Coffe. |
