What should I do in Ocho Rios for the day?

So I'm going on a cruise next month, this will be one of the stops. I've already been to Dunn's River falls. So if you guys have any ideas for something fun to do while I'm there.

If you have been to Ocho Rios before during the cruise ships docking you already know that things can be kinda hectic then. All the vendors in the markets make their living off the cruise ship peeps and they will be in full mode when you get there. There is one market in the center of town... don't go to that one, get a taxi and for like 150 J you can go down the main road to the other open air market where the deals will be much better. Always haggle with the vendors since most initial prices are 3 times to high. Jamaicans are experienced bargainers but they also get bored with it and will probably cave in to your price... since they get the crafts from a outlet store for next to nothing. Unfortunately like i said during the cruise ships dock the people are in full hustle mode and you won't find as much of the truly friendly and laid back attitude that exists in Jamaica. Other than shopping go snorkeling. The north coast has deep walls right off the coast so it is more suited for scuba but there is still plenty of snorkeling to be had. The beaches in Ocho looked good but i didn't bother since I was staying in Negril. Also near Ocho Rios is the White River. I have heard that they do white water river rafting down there. Have fun.

The Blue Mountain tour is great! You'll have breakfast @ a cafe on the beach, and upon your arrival to the top of the mountain, you'll pick out a bike to ride down the mountain. A great photo opt. On the other hand, if you're a Bob Marley fan, visiting his mausoleum on the Nine Mile tour is priceless. The gift shop is a bit pricey; but, the tee shirts are great quality. A meal is also provided on this tour.

Me and my husband are going to Jamaica the end of November and one thing I would like to do in Ocho Rios is go to Dolphin Cove. Depending on what you want to spend, cheapest is $45.00 for the entrance fee which includes unlimited contact with the stingrays and other stuff or you can spend more and have contact, or even swim with the dolphins. The regular entrance fee also includes the dolphin show, shark show, etc. Go to www.dolphincove.com for more information on what their prices include and you will have to make reservations in advance for any of the more expensive on-hands stuff. There are other things to do also, you can go on the Chukka ATV or Jeep Safari rides, some include the Dunn's River Falls, but others do not. The Chukka Tours also include Ocean Safari's, their address is www.chukkacaribbean.com , hope this helps!!

You could go tubing on the White River - lots of fun! [Your ship probably has an excursion for this.] Or you can walk over to Margaritaville and just hang out - without being hassled every five seconds by the street vendors.

Check out CruiseCritic.com, "Boards", "Ports of Call".

Forget about the downtown, especially the straw market.

Peat Taylor and Marva Shaw run popular excursions which usually include Dunn's.

Or, you could get a day pass at Couples Ocho Rios. They have an au naturel private island that has a swim-up bar. :-)

More information on the Cruise Critic "ports of call" board for Jamaica.

Go rafting on the Martha Bray River. Snorkel, go to a Rum Distillary, chill out on the beach. Bring me back some Blue Mt. Coffee.

Stay on the ship and watch the others come and go... and, thank your lucky stars your not on the shore rubbing up agains the unappreciative natives who would be nagging you to buy from them unrelentlessly. Unless you just like the atmosphere. Undoubtedly, the ship has better pools, restaurants, entertainment, not to mention the scenery. Enjoy the other ports and have a good cruise.
