What to do, and not to do in Puerto Rico? |
5 of us, guys, have rented a house in March in Ocean Park.
I have heard people say that Puerto Rico has gotten dangerous, Is that true? Also, What are some must see destinations? Not just cookie cutter things to do but some really awesome things.
Also , where outside of San Juan are good places to visit on the island.
Thanks for all the advice in advance!
Wesley Additional Details Where is La Perla, that everyone reccomends to stay away from? |

Ocean Park is a nice (beautiful beach) place but can be crowded in the weekend. Puerto Ricans are friendly in general but If you want a good recommendations don't argue with people that are looking for problems or are drunk. A visit to the Old San San Juan is a must where you can walk safely in a colonial city town with historic castles, churches and houses. This is a good place to find night life or to find good eating and drinking. If you need shopping don't miss Plaza las Americas in Hato Rey, the biggest shopping mall in the Caribbean.
If you like adventures rent a car and visit El Yunque Rain Forest near Luquillo beach. Be prepared to go hiking and get wet in the waterfalls or by the rain. The place is really beautiful. In this area you can also go to Fajardo the sailing port of P.R. Take other day to drive to the west to the Arecibo Observatory and the Camuy caves in the Area of Arecibo. A visit to the historic center of Ponce and Salinas(where you can eat "pastellitos" looking at the ocean) in the south of the island shall be in your itinerary. But if you want a true adventure take a plane and fly to Culebra Island where you can camp in one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Flamenco.
Remember that P.R. is not cheap especially in the Metropolitan Area of San Juan.
One last advice don't even try to enter the La Perla, unless you are in the company of a resident.
I hope this can help. |

Well coming in March 5 guys in Ocean Park....means party everywhere.
The Cookie Cutter:
- Old San Juan
- El Yunque
- Parguera
- Luquillo Beach
- Ponce Town
My recommendation - for you 5 guys:
- Where you are staying you are near from the fabulous night life of PR. You are near Isla Verde, Condado and Old San Juan.
- Go night life in Old San Juan - my recommendation thursday thru saturday. Those are the days with the most activity.
- Go on an Ecotour - There are several companies in PR that will take you. You will do rafting, climbing mountains...you will like it.
- Take a day and go east to Fajardo. Take the boat to Culebra and spend a nice day at the Flamenco Beach....one of the top 10 beaces in the world.
- Gamble...Gamble...Gamble at the casinos. Food and drinks are free at several of the casinos, so take advantage.
- Most of the Hotels have excellent night life, so enjoy them.
Being in Ocean Park, be extra careful...Puerto Rico has good people, but you will also find a minority that commit robberies, etc. The area you will be staying is top, but watch out, as the area is prompted to crimes. |

Here is a web site that have all the attractions that Puerto Rico offers. http://www.qpsm.com
You can also at the airport can find a copy of Qué Pasa magazine. I recommend to go to the El Yunque forest and Camuy Caves.
The area of San Juan is getting dangerous, specially during the night. So, you have to be careful if you want to walk during the night.
Other great places to visit in the south is Ponce, they have a beautiful art museum and in Lajas, there's a bioluminiscent bay that is very interesting. Also in the island of Vieques, there's another bioluminiscent bay. |

Don't go to La Perla! That is a very very dangerous area. Puerto Rico, like anywhere else in the world, has dangerous places - but it has very many beautiful areas & is one of my favorite vacation destinations. I am not Puerto Rican & I feel very at home whenever I travel to the island. Many people speak English as well as Spanish, so that makes life a lot easier if you don't speak Spanish. They use US dollars & they have just about everything you would find in the US & more. Some interesting things to do would be: Horseback riding, parasailing, snorkeling. A visit to the phosphorescent bay - Las Pargueras (sp?), a ferry trip for the day to either Culebra or Vieques Islands to go to the beach, a visit to El Conquistador - a fabulous hotel & casino. You don't have to stay there to visit. Do take a drive into the very scenic mountains - one interesting place to visit Las Cuevas de Camuy (caves). Condado in the San Juan area is scenic, beautiful & full of action. Puerto Rico is truly beautiful & a great choice of a vacation destination. |

I love all of the suggestions you have gotten so far. I live in PR and think that the rain forest (El Yunque), las Cuevas de Camuy, The nightlife in San Juan (where you guys are staying), everything is great. Please don't listen to the idiot who said La Perla. It is what you would call a ghetto. Im sure there are many great people who live there but the people there are very territorial and you do not want to go there. But dont get scared! PR has dangerous places, of course. But so does every part of the world. Be cautious when you walk at night and always stay together, since you will be in a strange place. You have nothing to worry about, believe me. Have lots of fun! |

hello! welcome to Puerto Rico. Ocean Park is really cool! NO, here is not dangerous. and destinations, go to El Yunque, El Morro, Bahia Fosforecente, and do some rappeling.
La Perla is a public housegroup, is far away from Ocean Park, and there lives good people, but also people that do same things as drug trafficants in New York.
Nothing abnormal that in USA doen's happens |

Hi There,
My husband and i went to Puerto Rico last year for our honeymoon and it was amazing. As far as it being dangerous - we didn't encounter anything like that. The people are very friendly and as long as you are smart with who you are with and such you'll be fine. There is so much to do in Puerto Rico- that i wish we would've had more time. I would say make sure you see the Rainforest- it's amazing. Old San Juan has these awesome fortresses and all the history from when Puerto Rico was founded and fought for. In Rincon there are caves and lots of adventurous things to do such as rock climbing, cave exploring and all that jazz. I would take a ferry from Fajardo and take a day trip to Culebra Island - Flamenco Beach is one of the most beautiful in the world! If you have the time you should definately try to stay a night or so at Vieques Island which is the same distance out from Puerto as Culebra Island - there you'll want to plan a trip to the Bio-Bay - it's a trip at night where they take you out by boat and even let you swim in the water that glows - you can read more about it at vieques.com. It's an awesome place and you'll enjoy going. Good luck:) |

Do not go to La Perla, although if you know someone from that place, it may be ok. Vieques or Culebra are nice places to go to.And I probably look for Puerto Rico News on Internet that will give you an idea of what to look for. And everywhere that you will go its dangerous |
