Fidel Castro's revolution suceeded in 1959. I was a child than. Every morning I'd hear the international news about how many people had been rounded up and shot by firing squad in Cuba.

I don't know if "Prime Minister" is the correct term, but he came to power in 1959.

I don't know if "sworn in" is correct, either.

Never , he took over after Batista's, and eliminated general elections and stayd in power since then ; January 1st 1959. He is not a prime minister , he has two ranks : Comander in Chief of the Revolution and President of the country. There are no Presidential elections in Cuba, no "oposite" party as per him. Anyways to long to explain. He just took power and never let go ...until got sick last year of course...
For those who explain that he sworn in Feb 1959 or 1976 , when was the election done? how many voted for the oposite party? who was the oposite contender in the presidential campaing? How many political parties were registered? pls update me...

PS; Who appointed the previous ministers before Fidel in Feb 1959? let me guesssss....Fidel ....very democratic

I think you have your facts a little screwed up. He led the military coup of the Cuban government in 1959 and assumed power as Cuba's leader.

the gunners
Fidel Castro was sworn in as Prime Minister on the 16th February 1959 until 2cnd December 1976 when he became President of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers.

cubalishus
February 1959, he became President and not Prime Minister at that time due to the end of the revolution,

As they say, 16 February 1959.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/february/16/newsid_2544000/2544431.stm

(Whether one regards the process as valid or not, one cannot deny that this occurred. It may surprise some to find that "prime ministers" can be appointed in a wide variety of ways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_minister#Entry_into_office The earliest prime ministers were selected by the king - in France and England.)

Further, looking at a list of prime ministers of Cuba - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Prime_Ministers_of_Cuba - we find:

Fulgencio Batista 10 March 1952 - 4 April 1952

Jorge GarcĂa Montes: 24 February 1955 - 26 March 1957
AndrĂ©s Rivero AgĂŒero: 26 March 1957 - 6 March 1958
Emilio NĂșñez Portuondo: 6 - 12 March 1958
Gonzalo GĂŒell: 12 March 1958 - 1 January 1959
José Miró Cardona: 5 January - 13 February 1959
Fidel Castro: 16 February 1959 - 2 December 1976

- the last five prime ministers prior to Castro's revolution were also not elected by the people.
