Whats the Deal with Americans smoking pot in Jamaica?

First and foremost, it is illegal to smoke and/or use marijuana in Jamaica.

Having said that, this law is not normally upheld unless a) you have large quantities of it; b) you are using it in a very public place; or c) you are attempting to export it.

So if you buy a one spliff and smoke it in your room or somewhere private you should be fine.

As far as buying it is concerned, you do so at your own risk. As a Jamaica I don't have the same experiences visitors do therefore I can't tell you what to look out for, what to say etc. I have never been approached by anyone offering to sell me pot. This does not happen to Jamaicans.

I have heard stories though of people being tricked out of their money or being lured to places and robbed or even worse...

So again, you need to always be aware that even though the police are lax in upholding the laws, you are still participating in an ILLEGAL activity so you do not have many legal rights should you end up at the wrong end of the deal.

It is illegal but the vibe I get is people tend to look the other way. Don't buy it at the airport. There are cameras all around since the airport is now canadian owned. Just smoke in private and use discression. When buying just talk to the person for a while and use good judgement before buying. You will be offered by many people. Most often you will be asked if "evry'ting ok"? "You need anyting"? I have heard there are undercover police but I have never had this happen. Remeber to haggle over the price. If they ask 40 try to barter down to 20. Just treat it the same as you would at home. Don't flash it around or act stupid. Respect!

SMOKING IS NOT THE PROBLEM HERE, BUT, WHERE YOU DECIDE TO PARTAKE IN THIS ACTIVITY..IF IT IS IN YOUR OWN PRIVACY..WELL NO PROBLEM..BUT ONCE IT IS PUBLIC (DEPENDS ON WHERE PUBLICLY SMOKE) IT WILL CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS..BUT ALL IN ALL YES YOU CAN SMOKE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE HERE..
ALSO BE CAREFUL OF WHERE YOU BUY YOUR WEED, BECAUSE GUYS HERE WILL CHARGE YOU AN ARM AND A LEG FOR A LITTLE STUFF...

Jeez I was just giving some advice...no reason to explode. your legal rights would put you in jail if the authorities caught you. Seriously...do these questions have any serious thought to them...because you would know the answer then.

ya you can do it. i have never smoked there though, you definately have the rights. watch out for bad stuff thats laced i guess

I didn't smoke in Jamaica, I had other stuff, but on your first day, just enjoy the beach, ignore the hustlers and just watch other people get hustled. The security at your hotel will only tell the hustlers to back off...thats it. But when you are ready to deal with them.....don't have them coming back and forth to negotiate. Even though you have smelled that sh** and try to negotiate, they have to go back to their so called 'boss' and they might come back with bammer!!!!

They will also offer you aloe vera for your burnt self and tell you to go to them.....that is a no no no.

If anyone ask you if you've been to Jamaica before, make sure you say you've been to Jamaica before, just do a little research on your area where you are going and check out what activities are available and just say you've done that. They will tell you that the company they work for give them only a little bit of wage...they want you to feel sorry for them and want big tips.........so be cheap!!!!

Enjoy! Keep your guard up though. Watch your wallet. A slit throat would be a bummer.

I've been told throughout my whole time in traveling in the Carribbean that marijuana is illegal no matter where you are. Plus if you get a trace of it on you or your luggage (it doesn't have to be much) when the drug dogs sniff your luggage on the way back, you'll get busted. Don't think it won't happen. I have a buddy that's on a terrorist watch file in London because when he set his cell phone down on his reloading table at a rifle range, it picked up a residue of black powder, which set the bomb sniffing dogs off.
