Anything, they will barter for stuff like hats and clothes, that you bring with you! But US dollars work fine-

THe British pound is very good. Any currency from North America . You can exchange any currency at the Fx Trader. The Canadian Dollar is quite good at this point. Much better than the US

Take US $'s. We went to Jamaica on our honeymoon and everyone (even the street vendors) wanted US dollars. All of the prices in the local shops and such are in US dollars.

In one local fast-food joint, the prices were listed in JD, but they still took US dollars.

The $US, Canadian$ and British Pound all have hefty exchange rates so either way you'll come out on top carrying those with you. Changing currency is easy at any of the Cambios/ FX dealers or Banks. Do use these official routes and don't try to sell currency through unofficial means. It is highly likely you will get ripped off.

Foreign Currency is widely accepted but I believe you sometimes pay more when you do. Also people instantly know you are a foreigner and so jack up the prices, try to sell you more than you want and you put yourself at greater risk of harrasment. Have a clear idea of the exchange rate when you purchase anything and make sure it is equivalent or near enough. People will try to sell things more expensive just because you are a foreigner. If you are travelling with Jamaicans let them do the talking. If not ask some other locals, not the vendors or their cronies, what the prices are before you buy. You could save some money having this information. Foreign accents + lack of knowledge = higher prices and more money.

Tipping is generally optional but can be helpful to ensure even greater assistance, especially for transactions outside of formal business establishments.

Enjoy your trip.
