When can US citizens visit Cuba LEGALLY, without worrying about "leaving a paper trail"? What law must change?

The web site of the US Department of State (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1097.html ) says explicitly that US citizens are forbidden by the "Cuban Assets Control Regulations" to travel to Cuba for tourism. I know people who have circumvented (well, broken) this law and gone anyway. But that's not going to work for my family. (I bet they won't stamp my passport; I guess I could stonewall a Customs agent if I had to. I'm not putting my school-age children through that.) The question is not, "How can I get away with this unlawful act?". It's "When will this not be a crime?" What has to happen? Can the President issue an Executive Order? Does it require an act of Congress? What's the Vegas line on getting this stupid law changed? What's the over/under time line?

Riki is right. It is really strange that people from the usa, the champions of freedom, support of democracy, etc, etc, wish to visit the only comunist country in america, that, besides that, is a sworn enemy of the usa

Makes no sense

You can read the section n "Entry Requirements" below for a better understanding of the rules. So Many people...esp. young people really do not understand why those regs are in place. They do not know that back in the 60's Fidel Castro simply nationalized all foreign businesses in Cuba...he stole them. What would you think if , tomorrow, Canada simply nationalized all American company branches located in Canada...simply took ownership of them without paying the owners.? That is what initiated the trade embargo. that and the fact that Cuba allowed Russia to place intercontinental, nuclear missiles in Cuba and aim them at the southern U.S. and threaten the U.S. with them...If Canada did that...we would not feel too friendly towards Canada either. Not knowing the history of the trade embargo makes some people think the U.S. has no reason for it...but knowing the history helps people understand it better. Before deciding that the restrictions against travel to Cuba are stupid, please read more about the history of the reasons for the embargo. If your neighbor entered your shed, took your lawn mower, weed whacker, garden tools and would not give them back or pay for them, then, if he lined up a row of missiles aimed directly at your house...would you not be a bit angry with him?

I don't get it
Why would you want to visit a country that is full of people you obviously object to being in your country.

Whats the favorite saying of most Americans? Aliens, that's it !
that's what you keep calling them

And why do you want to visit a country ruled by comunism and a declared enemy of the USA ?

What do you want to see ?

What must change is the Cuban government

Thank you for your concern about us

It will not be a crime when fidel and the bruder are no longer among us.

Right, fidel's regime IS A CRIME ! You are correct

It is really touching the concern that some people show here for OUR rights. We appreciate it

Don't you worry. As soon as big bad old fidel joins its ancestors, everything will be fine. Be patient the way we have been

Correction: The people that like the dictatorship are those that keep it in place

the sooner the better. There's a lot of history in Cuba and I want to go there for a while and experience how people live their lives there.

The US and Cuba have a lot to offer each other. It's time for these two governments to bury the hatchet and work together for a better tomorrow.

Until the leaders of these two nations have the balls to do that, official US policy is that travel and trade will be forbidden until communism (and the Castro's) are removed.

My guess is that within a year there wil be changes which will enable Americans who live in the self-proclaimed "freest country on earth:" to visit and enjoy Cuba as does the rest of the world without any problems. An article on ABC news last week announced that even the majority of S. Florida Cubans are in favor of lifting the embargo.

the us will never reverse the Helms-Burton act

Antonio A
The only way this will ever get turned is id Cuba changes it's political doctrine and allows what the US calls "free elections". Unfortunately this will not happen anytime soon, I have many friends that live in Cuba and the problem is most people still in the island like it the way it is. there is a good chance negotiations will be more open if Fidel dies but Raul is one of the same. Perhaps Obama will attempt to re-think the embargo, but again it's up in the air. In the meantime Cuba accepts American tourists flying in from Mexico ALL the time and since they are well aware of the NO TRAVEL law in the US they will let you into the country by filling out the immigration form and stamping only the form instead of your passport, thus you were never there and everyone is happy.
