I have been to Jamaica practically during every part of the year. I find the best deals are going to be from April 15 - Dec 15 which is usually considered off season.
I have never had a problem in Jamaica and I encourage you to get off the resort. No sense feeling trapped. Just use common sense. I do suggest however if going on a tour, go with someone who has a company not a taxi driver off the road (not all are trustworthy)...stick with the red licensed taxi cabs (at least that was the color of the licensed ones last time I was there), not the white plates.....don't walk the beach at night or flash jewelry.
I have only stayed in Negril (Home Sweet Home, Moonrise Villas) (Travelers beach Resort is also nice and fairly reasonable) and Treasure Beach (Sunset Resort). Treasure Beach is much more relaxing and not quite so many guys are "in love" with you, but it is also much quieter and further out on the S. Coast. Also, not much good snorkeling.
One last suggestion...if you go and locals ask you if it is your first time. tell them no, that you have been there several times. It is usually a way for them to figure out if you are someone who might be aware of how some of these guys operate or not. Not a big deal. |

Our favorite time to go is in December/January, since Jamaica is a nice 80 degrees compared to the cold of winter. March to May is also nice, but end of May is already approaching hurricane season, which ends sometime end of September to October.
Try to avoid Sandals or those other "touristy" places (unless that's what you want). We prefer the private resorts... although you will pay a pretty penny for it. It is worth it for us, not to be bothered by peddlers to get a hair braid or junk or tips. |

Love Love Love Jamaica -- Ya Mann.
Have been there 3 times. Once in March to Montego Bay -- awesomeweather !!! perfect for a spring break. Another time in March/April to Ocho Rios -- prices lower after prime season.... Loved Ocho Rios..... felt safer... stayed in a nice resort type hotel... did go out for some very nice dinners that wern't expensive at all ... just be sure to use hotel taxi's they'll take you to the restaurant or place you want to go and pick you up at a designated time... It's not safe to take a cab unless it's rated by the hotel. During the day we went up into the hills and beautiful gardens, to the Dunn's river falls. All the locals were nice and helpful, but many are poor and want to be tipped... you get used to it. A cruise might be a great option so you could see multiple islands, not just Jamaica. Be sure to wear sunscreen, you get a lot of sun snorklijng or even s itting in the shade. I didn't put enough on my face whilein the water and got sunburned around my eyes. A third time I went was in May/early June to Montego Bay --- the weather againwas perfect, but wear isn't it beautiful to go during the spring .... I'd say Dec is rainy, Feb, March, April are ideal.... summer can be sporadically rainy and beware of possible storms/hurricaines in Aug and fall.
Happy travels !!! |

If you are a collegian then the best time for you would be around spring-break (mid March through mid May) because there are tons of activities during that time for spring-breakers.
If you are not a spring-breaker (like me) then I find the best time to visit is between late May to late August. The weather during that time is hot and great for sightseeing and touring. I usually go during this time. the first time I went with my family to Jamaica was in May 2000 and it was a mistake. Even though we really had a lot of fun, everywhere we went there were unruly spring-breakers from the US.
I don't mind people having fun on vacation, spring break or whenever but I do get annoyed when people act like hooligans. That is pretty much how most of the spring-breakers I saw there behaved.
Also during May to September you get the best pricing on airfare and hotels (except during the early part of August when the big music fests are going on). During late September through early December its hurricane season down there so the chances of really going out and having fun is dependent on the weather.
I have stayed at FDR Pebbles in Trelawny, FDR in Runaway Bay, Holiday Inn in Montego Bay and my favorite Point Village in Negril. All of these resorts are reasonably priced with Point Village having the best deals and FDR in Runaway Bay the most expensive of the four.
Point Village is a lush tropical beachfront resort with well manicured grounds and oh yeah...the most picturesque sunset! It is about an hour fifteen minutes from Montego bay airport. It is also near to all of the fun spots and shopping in the Negril area. Check out the Jungle night club..its fun!
Holiday Inn is perfect if you don't want to travel too far to get to your holiday destination. It is only about fifteen minutes from the airport in MOBay and central to all the happenings around the area.
FDR Pebbles is a cute beachfront resort too with beautifully constructed wooden suites that give you a nice rustic / antique feel but yet has very cozy and modern accomodations. It is about 40 minutes from the airport.
FDR in Runaway Bay is another cool beachfront resort with ample activities. It is about an hour from the airport and about an hour from Ocho Rios where there are tons of activities invluding the famous Dunns River waterfalls.
The get the best deals on shopping go to the open-air and craft markets where you can bargain with the vendors. For coffee and rum the best prices are in the supermarkets. Avoid the malls because the prices are fixed and you cannot bargain with the vendors. Some resorts have days when they allow a few vendors to set up their booths by the beach or the pool-side and they usually have good prices and you can bargain.
I hope this helps and you have a great Jamaican vacation :) |

We went in September and it was great weather. We were not that impressed with Jamaica, however. It's not all that safe to go off of whatever resort you're at, unless you hire a local guide. Nothing to do but beach/water stuff, which isn't bad, but if you're looking for cultural things, forget it. We stayed at the Sandals, Ocho Rios, which was okay. Not overly luxurious, but good beach. |
