The best way I have found to explore many places in the Caribbean is to take a cruise. With one day in each port, it becomes easy to decide if you want to go back. With one Eastern Caribbean cruise, one Western, and one Southern, you will have an entire list of about 10 places that you want to see again, places to avoid (that once looked like a great place to visit), and those that are so-so. Some of my favorites:

Virgin Islands: US territory, which means a minimum of documentation. Very scenic.

Puerto Rico: Nice day visit, with a lot to see

Grand Cayman: Safe, top notch water sports. We returned and bought a time share.

Jamaica: Unbelievably scenic, but not very safe. Always go in a group.

Granada: Not really worth it.

Aruba, Curacao: A very nice stop below the hurricane belt. Many casinos.

Bahamas: Close to US. Many interesting sights. Good water sports, including some unique events.

Bermuda: Not in the Caribbean, but worth a trip. Safe, but expensive. Politeness is a virtue. If you forget your manners, you will be gently reminded.

Most other islands will fall within the range of those listed. Discover your own places to re-visit.

It really depends on what you like. Each island is different. My favorites are Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, and St. Lucia.
