See map below. It is an island in the Caribbean southeast of Florida. The island that has both Haiti and the Dominican republic on it is just to the west of Puerto Rico.

If you take a USA map and look at the state of Florida, under FL is the island of Cuba to the right of Cuba is the island of Jamaica and the virgin islands, keep looking to your right and you will find the caribbean
then there is Haiti and Dominican Republic (known as the hispanola island) then the little dot island next to Dominican Republic is Puerto Rico.
There is lots of places called Puerto Rico such as cities in other countries, but not considered the official caribbean island. In Spain there is an island called the canary islands and inside there is a little town called Puerto Rico which is totally different from the caribbean islands.
