Most people think Puerto Rico is an island,but really it is an archipelago (Spanish: archipiélago), a group of islands, like Hawaii and Japan.
Puerto Rico is formed by the following islands:
* Puerto Rico: called by the people of Vieques and Culebra as "Isla Grande" or "the Big Island". 76 out of 78 cities & towns of PR are located here.
* Vieques: It is a island-municipality with a population of 10K. Called Isla Nena ("Baby Girl Island").
* Culebra: the other island-municipality (smaller and less populated than Vieques.
* Isla de Mona: Zero population (just Park Rangers station), natural reservation, campters go there to camp & hunt.
* A lot more smaller islands / cays: Monito, Palomino, Palominito, Caja de Muertos, Gilligan's Island, Icacos, etc.

Vieques lies about 8 miles (13 km) to the east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures approximately 21 miles (34 km) long by 4 miles (6 km) wide.
