Depend on what you want to do.

For active nightlife, surfing, younger crowd: go to the North Coast (Puerto Plata, Cabarete etc). The sea can be wrought, the beaches are not as nice, in my opinion, as what you can find in the other areas of the Dominican Republic.

For beautiful white sand beaches, go to Punta Cana (not much excursions nearby thought).

For peace and quiet (for now), eco-tourism and long wild golden sand beaches, go to Samana (very lush, but it rains quite a bit).

La Romana/Bayahibe is nice as well, and on the Caribean sea.

Hope it helped!

If you are willing to do a small amount of research and reading on your own then visit this web site. You can find what pleases you at various places throughout the DR. Lets just say there is some very biased advice in some of the answers you have been given.

We stayed in Bavaro in 2005 at a resort and had a wonderful time. Explored some of the small villages, met some wonderful people. Saw the Basilica in Higuey and the market there as well. Shopped the street stores in Higuey as well. Toured throughout the Bavaro region on dune buggies....was a BLAST.
I wouldn't begin to presume to tell you which resort or what part of the DR to vacation at because I have no idea what your tastes are or what sort of things you enjoy.
All I can say is I love the country and it's people. Enjoy your vacation !

If you are a under 30 person looking for an active vibrant town I would suggest Cabarete! Sports minded people during the day partying all night on the beach!

If you are into being totally taken care of with out a care to see this beautiful country I would try Punta Cana where you can lock yourself in your all inclusive resort and drink all you can drink and eat like a pig!

Personally I LOVE this country! It is safe-the people are nice and has the most beautiful geography you will see on any island! Way nicer than places like the Bahamas where you can spit from one end of the island to the other! You have beaches galore-LUSH Mountains (Highest Peak in the Caribbean) where they have snow often and frost daily!-Dry Arid climate where all you see is cactus!

I prefer the North Coast because it is diverse with cliffs and mountains to one side of the road and beaches on the other side of the road! If I were you I would start off by flying into Puerto Plata (POP is airport code) and go to Punta Rucia first where you will see a small fishing village with the most beautiful beaches-the best inexpensive seafood served outdoors under roof!

Then I would go to Luperon which considered a safe harbor to dock or moor boats and is visited by boaters from all over the world!

Then I would go to Confresi which is the home of Ocean World-the largest and nicest Ocean theme park in the country!

Then I would stop in Cabarete and see the Wind Surfers-Kite Surfers and Long board surfers-a great beach and a great nite life!

Then I would go to Playa Grande which is a world class golf course with 12 holes directly on the ocean if you golf and a great beach by the same name! Then head to Cabrera which is the next town that is known for high end tourism-a middle class calm ocean town which also has great beaches!

Then of course the Samana Peninsula and the towns of Samana-Las Terenas and Las Galeras! Lovely beaches-whale watching in season and another one of the beautiful areas of this country!

There you have my dos pesos!

Punta Cana

Happy Feet
Hi Courtney!
This is a very difficult question!
Best places :
Punta Cana = only hotels/beach, nothing to see/discover
Boca Chica = Very old and only 3 hotels 45km from Santo
Domingo not much to see.
Puerto Plata = The best choice, biggest beaches, mountains,
10 min from the little town, Ocean World, a lot
to see and to discover.
Santo Domingo = No all included hotels, big city 3,5 millions
souls, a lot to visit! no beaches.
I“m a tour operator for VIP“s so if you need more info/help just contact me.
Bye Bye
Gilbert
