i've heard punta cana has the best beaches

That really depends on what you find 'nice', and what kind of holiday/vacation you enjoy best.

One of the nicest places here for beach fun is not on your list, Bayahibe, with Dominicus Beach, this is a area with 6 major hotels, and beautiful protected waters. Saona Island is nearby with most hotels offering excursions every day. The countryside around Playa Dorada is much prettier than either Punta Cana or Bayahibe, but the coast is Atlantic facing and much more weather-prone.

The most beautiful countryside, in my opinion ( I have lived here for ten years and have travelled most of the country ), is the Samana peninsula, the road between Sanchez and Las Terrenas is probably the most spectacular in the country, and once of the prettiest that I have seen in the world.

If you want to look around the country I would probably choose Playa Dorada, and then rent a car to explore ( with due caution, the drivers here make Italians in Rome look like angels ! ). If you want the beach stuff then Punta Cana/Bavaro or Bayahibe.

Whatever you choose have fun, and try to get out of the hotel a bit, it's an amazing country away from the tourist areas.

In my opinion peurto plata is the best. I got married there 9 years ago in the inn on the green complex. The place was spotless and the staff very friendly mind you that was 9 years ago.

From the reviews that I've read, I understand it to be a coin-flip between Punta Cana and Bavaro.

I have only been to playa dorado, so I can't comment on the rest. I would recommend it though.

Punta Cana is the area and the beach is Bavaro Beach.
LaRomano is pretty too.

Have fun

I like the north coast of the Dominican Republic the best and that is where I live here.

One person is talking about Puerto Plata but stayed at the Bahia Principe which is in RIo San Juan and not Puerto Plata. Bad info since they didn't even know where they were:)

Where you stay depends on what you like.

I live in Sosua but Cabarete is close by. If you are a young sports minded person who likes to be active during the day and party all nite go to Cabarete. It is known for world class Kite and Wind surfing. Yearly competitions are held there every year.

If you are a little older and love a great nite life go to Sosua.

If you are real wealthy and want to experience High End Villa tourism go to Cabrera and spend upwards of 15,000 US dollars for a week and get pampered like you have never been before.

Las Terenas and Samana are mostly Italian and French people and tourists. Nice beaches but nothing much happening other than whale watching in season.

Which ever place you pick on the North Coast you will have casinos and great golf courses if that is what you like.

Have a great trip!

"the Dominican" is a person, "the Dominican Republic" is a place.

I've only been to Puerto Plata - but it is lovely. Very close to Sosua too which has got a gorgeous beach which surrounds a little sea inlet with clear clear water.

Without a doubt, Punta Cana. We've been several times, first time we stayed at Natura Park in P. Cana. Then we thought why not try Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete. We stayed Hotel Bahia Principe and it was the worst holiday we've ever had, and I'm very well travelled. There were loads of sand flies, everyone in the hotel got bitten to hell, and some people were effected really badly. Quite frankly I don't know why people rave about Sosua, it was a dump as far as I'm concerned. Finally we got a car and went with some friends to the beaches where the locals go and we were fine there. But overall I'd say Punta Cana every time it's miles better, we've been back twice since and are going again at Christmas, but never again to Puerta Plata. Why not check out www.tripadvisor.com see what others say.
