Puerto Rico is incredibly beautiful, and since I'm Puerto Rican, I'm biased, but honestly Puerto Rico is incredibly beautiful, and the night life is amazing. Puerto Ricans know how to party and the world knows it, that's why we got voted happiest people on earth. I'm sure Hawaii is beautiful as well, but I recommend PR! |

Both are amazing. It depends on what are you looking for. Go to lonleyplanet.com I am sure that will help you decide. Hawaii is much more expensive though. In my opinion you should try to visit both. |

Kauai is the best of all the Hawaiian Islands but if you are leaving from the east coast it's 12-14 hours of traveling....It also ain't cheap but if you get kitchenette you can go grocery shopping and do your own cooking. there are market stands too and an incredible farmers market on Weds I think up past Princeville (Anini Beach is awesome)
Use Travelocity for fare watcher alert but you'll still be paying around $400-$500 to get to hawaii, then you HAVE to rent a car or your stcuk at one place. The cheapest hotel is around $88 a night but if you spring a little more you get a much bigger bang for your buck and less old tourists.
I went there for 18 days this Jan and had a wonderful time but the trip....ugh. As for beauty, Kauai has twin waterfalls, hiking into rainforests, beautiful clean beaches, snorkeling but there are also great restaurants and divey little shacks on wheels with awesome fish flautas and mexican-style food on Anini Beach outside of Princeville.
I have been to St John, Tortola etc etc and have always heard that Peurto Rico is as wonderful. I plan to go there this January. Flights are cheap compared to hawaii. Right now they are around $150 and the rentals are comparable to Hawaii maybe even better rates for what you get.

I would say both... Hawaii is much bigger plus you have the other islands around. If you want to compare it, then is like going to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. In that case you enjoy a lot more in Puerto Rico and the islands and get more bang out of your $$$.
Now, I do agree with the comment posted earlier, it just depends what you are looking for... you want something more Americanized than go to Hawaii but, if you want something less Americanized but,, still a US Territory come and check Puerto Rico and the Islands.
