I'm looking at the DR as a possible honeymoon spot, and one resort that I've found that's been developed in the last couple years is Ocean Blue and Sand Golf Beach Resorts, on cheapcaribbean.com
I don't see how thousands or millions pumped into an economy from tourism could be that bad, like the bitter previous poster seems fit to grip about. |

The newest all inclusive resort is the "Sun Village" in Juan Dolio

Real estate developer Donald Trump said Friday that he is teaming with Cap Cana SA to create a luxury resort on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic.
The $2 billion project, named Trump at Cap Cana, will include a condominium hotel, golf course, golf villas, beach club and luxury homes.
Ever since the LDS church built their Temple in the capital of Santo Domingo, the country has become a hit with Americans. |

WHo cares? I wish they would ban those stupid places. They are ruining the economy and contributing to corruption in the government! The people who go to them don't seem to care though as long as the cheap booze keeps flowing ....
--------------------
Nathan - everywhere these places pop up, local businesses and smaller hotels/restaurants/bars are put out of business (among other obvious resons, the hotel informs guests that it is "dangerous" to leave the resort, which is utter BS). The resort then employs people at conditions somewhat better than slave labor. Then all of the profits are re-patriated back to the country of the parent company (of course after greasing a few "needy" palms) and leave the country with nothing except people whose businesses were forced into bankruptcy, and some low paid jobs.
On a macro level they help only the rich, and on a micro level they destroy more than they create. It is cheap mass tourism, and since the companies need to make money somewhere they usually save at the expense of employees and communities (water treatment?, nah - just dump it in the ocean downcurrent of the beach, etc.), and serve only the cheapest booze and stuff if you don't specifically ask or pay for better drinks. |
