The Bahamas is very much a part of the Caribbean, and the Caribbean Basin is generally regarded as the area south of Florida and bounded to the west by Central America and the south by South America.
Although strictly speaking the Caribbean Plate does not cover this entire region, more than pure geology go into determining these regional boundaries, including historical, political and cultural ties.
I would imagine that the Bahamas now considers itself more Caribbean than West Indian as the latter term has come to be commonly linked to those countries that are part of the West Indies cricket team. Outside of that, the term "West Indies" has become somewhat of an anachronism, an often undesirable throwback reference to the days of British colonialism.

The Bahamas are islands off the east coast of Florida, in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Bahamas is considered part of the West Indies, not the Caribbean because it's not in the Caribbean Sea.
