I agree with webejammin and Ann. Those other people have obviously not been to Jamaica and just like listening to themselves talk bla bla bla. Unfortunately, they don't know a thing about the subject.
I love Jamaica. I have not had one negative experience there. The people are gentle and caring. Treat them with the respect you would give yourself and you will have a great time.
I can't wait to go back to Jamaica and its beautiful people.

traveler you were the only one who told any truth, As i am from Detroit Michigan and think i know what is an is not safe, And I can tell you this all places have some degree of crime and trouble, Jamaica is a very poor country, but have some of the nicest people you may ever met, with this being said i can tell you that most of Jamaica with the exception of parts of Kingston is no worse than most city or large areas of the U.S and i bet that does not stop you from going to these city's, Jamaica # 1 income is off tourist and that means they can not have bad reports on crime coming out to support there your income, but i can say that there is nothing to worry about. IF YOU USE COMMON SINCE. and street smarts, don't wear flashy cloths out with lots of bling. Don't flash large amounts of money in site of groups, just like you would do in the U.S. If you use this common since and be polite in your response's you will have no trouble, I am not saying you will not have people trying to make a living by selling goods, but you will not have to worry about being shoot, beat-up or kidnapped, as most people report, these people have never been there.

we got ourselves a taxi and driver who had knowledge, treat him well and he will look after you. If you can, get to 9 miles, amazing place

You don't have to avoid no part in Jamaica as a tourist, how people are going to know that you are a tourist, their are black and white people living in Jamaica all nationality, Picture where you come from, it is the same in Jamaica good and bad people good and bad roads, the sun shines in Jamaica just like in any other part of the world

You have to be on your guard where ever you go on the island you just have to be sensible and keep your wits about you but try and enjoy your stay in Jamaica although I would of chosen the peaceful and beautiful island of ANGUILLA maybe next time OK.....

Go to Trinidad instead

I would avoid Kingston any time of year. The roads in Jamaica can be narrow with curves, goats, cows etc. Use common sense and don't walk the beaches at night. If you go on a tour use a tour company, not just some taxi driver off the street, set up airport transfers through your hotel. Treasure Beach is amazing, but very quiet and not a lot of great snorkeling but the beach (what is left after Ivan) is nice. Negril is nice in November although it has been about 5 years since I have been there and I hear it has been built up alot. Although I have never been, I also hear that Port Antonio is wonderful and beautiful.
I have been to Jamaica about 11 times in the past 8 years. The people are wonderful and I never felt unsafe.

b
the whole country, try the Bahamas instead
