Which would you choose as a holiday in Jamiaca (Nigrel or Ocho Rios)? |
My friend and I are looking for a relaxing laid-back holiday with the choice of activities during the day. Night-life is not a necessity.
We would love to go swimming with dolphins, rock climbing, water sports, horse riding, affordable tours etc.
Which would you choose? |

Negril...anytime. Noticed that when it gets windy in Ocho, it sure does, but in Negril, the air is calm. It was nearly ten years since I last went, but I now hear despite it still being a fine place to visit/stay, you get young Jamaican men (successfully, I dare to add) spending all day on beaches watching for middle-aged single white lasses (or the ones who despite coming with partner/hubby choose to be independent) to latch onto - and not meaning to be mean - some of the women go just for that. All the things you mentioned are close by...caves, rock climbing - and - er...water sports! Don't worry to much about the hype that Jamaica's the most 'dangerous country on Earth' - or whatever it is the media calls it now...that's only a Kingston thing - the country is really like London...you have rough areas (in city mentioned), but throughout the island, the difference is mind-boggling - with towns where everyone still goes to church, and would do anything for visitors.
Ignore the moron above me...obviously he spent his time there snarling at them...if he ever went at all. |

Well i think you have made it very easy for me to give u a choice.. First I must tell you that I live here in Jamaica and I am in the field of Hospitality, Tourism & Events Management.
The choice i would give you is Ocho Rios, simply because you said "Night-life is not a neccessity".
Negril is good for both day and night life, but, it's much better for night-life. The attractions you desire to part-take in are mostly in Ocho Rios, St. Ann. I should also let you know that St. Ann has the most attraction sites and places of interest in the entire Jamaica.
1. You desire to swim with dolphins - This can only be done in Ocho Rios
2. You want to do Rock Climbing - This is alos done in Ocho Rios and can be done in negril too, but a better experience in Ocho Rios.
3. Water Sports - This can be done in both areas (Negril or Ocho Rios)
4. Horse back Riding - This can be done in both areas too, but, there is a wider variety of Horse Back Riding offered in Ocho Rios.
5. Affordable Tours - I must let you know that there is technically NO tour that is done in Negril itself. If you are staying in Negril and want to do a tour you will have to take a taxi to where ever you desire to go. But in Ocho Rios there are a few places in walking distance and even if you take a taxi the rates are much much less than if you were in Negril.
This is NOT to say that Negril isn't a lovely place, Negril is absolutely wonderful, but the reasons you stated you are coming i would not hesitate to recommend Ocho Rios.
It would really cost you too much for taxi fare to do all the attractions and stay in Negril....But if you are interested in Night Life then Negril is the place to be.
Feel free to enquire about anything else you may wanna know. |

I'd stay in Ocho Rios for the beginning of my trip and do all the activities, most of them are located closer to the Ocho Rios area. Then I'd move on to Negril which is ideal for the laid back, relaxing atmosphere |

Usually I would choose Negril because I find it to be a bit more quiet, however you've mention that night life is not a must and Negril is famous for that. I know that in Ocho Rios you are able to do all the activities you have mentioned and safe horse back riding is available just minutes from the town, this takes place close to the Dunns River falls, which is another one of Jamaica's main attraction. Have fun |

I'm going to suggest you look at the RUI resorts very affordable but nice with good food and great service most of the activities your interested in are more in the Ocho Rios area so look at that 1 first(closer to the activities -means less travel expense) |

Negril is much nicer. Fabulous beach. There are a number of all inclusive resorts on the beach in Negril.
