Taino's were the indigenous people of Puerto Rico (as well as some othe caribbean islands). They are thought to be related to the Arawak indians of south america. The US claims that almost all of the taino's were wiped out, but a study from the University of PR later found that about 62% of puertoricans have taino DNA. When the spanish arrived they made many taino men into slaves, but they took many taino women as wives. Today you can see some influences in words like Boriken, food, music & other things. Also there are a few ancient sites of the taino living quaters & bateyes around the islnad. Caguan Park in Utuado & Tibes Park in Ponce are some examples.

Yes, the taino were related to the Arawak natives of South America, they migrated and populated several islands of the Caribbean Sea, mostly Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica. Other group called "caribes" populated the Lesser Antilles and were antagonists of the tainos at PR. I'm not sure if the caribes were also related to the arawaks.

The conqueror from Spain slaved them and took their women as concubines. Sons of mixed race (spain & taino) started groin in numbers everywhere. The tainos revolted agaisnt the spainiards and were extermninated, other died due to lack of inmunity against european diseases like chicken pox.

The spaniards then bring african slaves to replace the tainos. Soon they were added to the gene pool of the boricuas. Almost all of us has the three races in our DNA (plus since 1898 some also have USA blood in the family).
