During slavery times the lighter skinned slaves worked in their masters house while the darker skinned worked in the fields; hence this showed a level of preference and inferiority.
For many many years black people suffered not only physically but mentally as well.
What we are seeing today in our society is a reflection of that- slavery mentality; it is believed that the lighter your complexion the better you are treated and some say that it makes you "closer to white america".
Still today, white people gets preffered treatment over black people, and some are brain washed to believed that it has changed.
Hey not because they say we are free, look we are still chained to poverty. We black people do still face a great amount of inequality in this world and its still hard to be black.
Please understand that people want to be treated fairly and they do that to themsleves to feel important esp. what they see in the media (lighter skin models etc on tv.)
There are 2 types of discrimination: attitudinal and systemic.
Some people will never admit that they are racists and they cannot change, the system can some what but there will always be racism in this world. |

To tell you the truth I can't tell if someone is bleaching there skin but I've been told if the face is lighter than the rest of the body then the person is bleaching cause usually bleachers just bleach there face. Alot of people do this not only Jamaicans. Spanish, Americans, Mixed people even do it if there skin is dark.
In Jamaica you always hear this :
" Da girl deh brown and sexy e ! " or " What a nice browning e skin pretty e ! "
Browning = Light skin
Then other times you'd hear :
" Da girl deh black e ! "
Not much of a compliment. Alot of people are told that they are so black either by there family, friends, strangers, guys..etc. Girls bleach way more than guys. Dark skin Jamaicans love light skin so if a dark skin Jamaican girl hear that she's gonna go bleach to impress a guy or cause she think black is ugly. Black is beautiful !
Some guys in Jamaica bleach cause they have low self esteem or a girl might say she likes light skin guys. This is a world wide thing. It's big in Jamaica though. There are many things in Jamaica to change your appearance examples :
Chicken pill ( Makes butt bigger. )
Bleaching cream ( Makes skin lighter. )
And many other products to change you. The sad thing about bleaching your changing yourself you'll be in danger of getting skin cancer and many other side affects which people don't carry about if there bleaching. They just wanna get light.
I say black, brown, yellow, white, tan and any other skin color is beautiful !
A story.....I have a cousin who I recently saw she lives in Antigua with her boyfriend. She was the darkest one in our family but for some reason everyones' saying her skin looks nice and lighter. There saying she's bleaching cause her boyfriend is light skin and that makes her feel insecure.
P.S. Even if you bleach and your an ugly person , bleaching won't make you any more beautiful. Cause not every light skin person is beautiful and not every dark skin person is beautiful and bleaching makes it even worse.

I grew up watching almost everyone in my family bleach...they wouldnt go outside in the day time unless they absolutely had to!! It was so funny, because their faces would be light and their lips black!! also...if they bleach their entire bodies, their elbows and knees would still be the original color...personally, that takes too much time and money, because you have to keep it up, and frankly I love my chocolate skin! |

Stupidity. Desperation. Low self-esteem.
EDIT:
I should add that my personal preference is for elegant, confident, dark skinned women. Never met a 'browning' who could quite do it for me! Never EVER dated a woman who 'bleached'. |

I see lots of Jamaicans with face colour that clearly doesn't match with the rest of their body. Michael Jackson changed his skin colour through surgery, people who bleach use chemicals.
We can ask why do white people tan?
People just aren't happy with who they are. The images they see around them are more beautiful than what they see in the mirror so they think they need to fit those images. The media has its role to play in creating low self-esteem ("ideal" pictures which are touched up are the ones shown not natural ones) that pushes some to bleach.
Unfortunately both men and women do it. The other responses make it seem that only ladies do it and that's false. |

I don't personally, but everyone should be proud of whatever color God made them.Although,I am white, and wish I were darker! I really do not tan,I just burn when in Jamaica! Bleaching sounds dangerous and should not be done in my opinion! |
