Why are most Trini vagrants able bodied men under 40?

If 2% of them, mentally handicapped, I would be shocked.
They're hard-work handicapped.
It have a mad man up by me, he not begging. He does sell pimentos and do yard work. If he have his mad papers, who is the rest of them?
Begging me for my hard earned money!

In the Express recently, when the mayor was talking about breaking down Taramind square, the express questioned a few of the vagrants about their opinion on the matter. They all answered well, one saying the mayor mad, a lady saying she only homeless, she doh take food from people.
They all know what they doing and how to fix the problem.

yuh see what weed and cocaine does do! Just this week a security guard shot a guy cause he was behaving erratic - he died unfortunately and his family is saying he was on weed! So I personally believe most of them are there beacuse of the poor decisions they made in life - others were just dealt a harsh blow in life!!!!!

Able bodied and strong - cuz de have to walk soem good distances to get food or shelter - de do odd hard jobs for little money and food, they have it hard! Counting my blesssings yes!

They may seem able bodied and mentally stable but they may have mental illness that has nothing to do with being able to spend a dollar. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, manic depression are all legitimate mental illness that we, as Caribbean people, have a difficult time accepting as valid. If these people would be diagnosed in the early stages (school age students do show symptoms of these disorders) they could have treatment and medication and be allowed to contribute to society in a positive way.

While I think there is some validity to what Chef D says about mental and physical handicaps, I know for a sure some of those vagrants smarter than me. If you could tell me my $5 eh enough for you to buy what YOU want to eat (not what yuh could get mind you) you cyah be dat dotish. While I can't see anyone wanting to live that way, I do believe that at least some of them are where they are due to sheer laziness.
