Why did Mastercard put Cuba as a restricted country? |
I visited Cuba last year in August and could use Mastercard. I returned to visit Cuba this month of January and when trying to access it in Cuba the machine read "Restricted country". On my return I checked with my local bank and was told it was the mother company that made that decision to put Cuba as a restricted country this January 2009. why is that? How could I contact Mastercard headquarters? Additional Details It is not because Cuba is a communist country. What about China? Yet America is making lots of trade with the Chinese. I have hopes that President Obama will cancel then stupid embargo the US government has on Cuba. |

Bubbles, don't you know that there is an embargo that forbids to spend money in Cuba ?
No, it is because of the embargo, not because it is comunist
Well, I have hopes that Obama will cancel the criminal brothers before canceling the embargo. Thanks for your concern about us |

It is because of the embargo
some credit cards are American For example Visa, Meastro, Amex if your credit card starts with the number 5 it will work if it starts with a 6 or in some cases 3 it will not.
Marstercard is own by visa But some visas will work. like i said it depends on the first number at the beginning of your long digit number on the card
None of mine work they all begin with 6 |

I got back from Cuba last week. We tried using a Canadian Master card and a Belgian Master card. Neither worked. |

you might call Mastercard. in Canada: 1-800-263-2263. That Cuba is communist which you obviously knew before you went should have absolutely nothing to do with it. Other people on this page, please note this is an English language page not an American page as such it is visited by Brits, Canadians etc etc. all of whom legally visit Cuba by the hundreds of thousands every year. |

It is because the US has a trade embargo with cuba. Americans are not permitted to spend money in cuba, deal with cuban businesses, and purchase cuban products. The same thing goes for Cubans.
Because of this, Mastercard, as an American company, does not allow purchases in Cuba. If they did, and the government was to find out that you used your mastercard in cuba, they would be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Honestly, the embargo on Cuba has prevented communism from spreading to nearby nations. The threat of losing relations with the United States has kept our neighbors friendly, and considerations for extending the embargo to Venezuela should happen. |

That doesn't make sense because Mastercard IS accepted in Cuba. Which bank are you associated with? If you're from the US, then that would be a problem because that would mean your Mastercard is US-based, thus you wouldn't be able to use it in Cuba.
If you're from Canada, it should not have posed a problem.
Read this link which is updated as of 2009. Mastercard is widely accepted but you seriously need to find out what's going on with your bank.
