Why did puerto rico become apart of the united states?

What is you asking????
* a part ? or
* apart (separated)?
----
USA in 1898 had a war against Spain and won. As part of the treaty (signed in Paris) to end the war Spain gave to USA the colonies of Cuba, PR, Philipines, and Guam. Cuba was set independent shortly after. Philipines become independent in the 1940's if Im not wrong, and Guam and PR still remains as US territories.

PR is an organized (with our own constitution or organic act that establish our local goverment) and un-incorpored territory of the USA. According to the US Supreme Court an unincorpored territory is not a part of the USA.

well after the spanish american war in 1898 ( we fought a weak country to prove our dominance and get on the world stage) we recieved puerto rico and cuba and phillipines and guam from spain. we freed cuba because they were too hostile against outside rule, while puerto rico was receptive so we held onto them to this day and age because they like it

also they are a us territory......they have citizen ship and can fly without passports to any state but they dont have to pay taxzes and they cant vote.....they always vote against becoming a state because us citezen ship without taxes is a sweet deal

Well it was a Spanish Colony, but after the Spanish-American war, Spain ceded Puerto Rico and a few other places to the US in the Treaty of Paris

Vega Syndrome
At the Spanish-American War of 1898, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Philippines were given to the United States to pay for war damages, as the war was started when the USS Maine was bombed, suspectly by Spanish army. The treaty of Paris, negotiated between Spain and the United States, Spain granted these islands to the United States to pay for war damages, in exchange the United States paid a certain amount of money(I don`t recall right now the amout that was paid to Spain, but you can google it on the web) to pay for Spain`s war damages. Just a few months prior to the war and treaty Spain and Puerto Rico representatives, like Luis Munos Rivera, had come to an agreement giving Puerto Rico autonomy. But all that meant was that Puerto Rico would have it`s own government and Spain would have the last say on all other issues like trade and governing laws. Which is, more or less, just the same deal that was agreed upon by the United States and Puerto Rico legislator, Luis Munos Marin. We have a democratictly elected governor, senate and representatives, but trade, customs, military, financial and law issues are dealt by the United States Congress.

At the time of this wars between US, France,and spain PR was a strategic place to move so after Spain colonised PR US knew that we were a verry good place so here comes US and kick spain out and since then PR is part of US.....Or someting like that :)

shinningstarofthecarribean
Puerto Ricans have been trying to be "Apart" from the United Stated but We are a Colony...we have NO say on this Issue...

Being a "Part" of Puerto Rico was neither our choice...

Because we attained ownership of the territory.

because it's a cute island and we like cute things, so we annexed it.

do u mean a part or apart?
anyways, puerto rico its not a state, its a common wealth, more like a US territory, such as guam or virgin islands.
not hawaii or alaska, which are official states.

the reason we became a US territory its because US invaded puerto rico in 1898 and wanted to take over puerto rico completly, but things didnt work out exactly like US had planned, because once the americans got to PR, the puerto rican culture was well established and had a strong sense of culture by the spaniards, which US had a huge headache with puerto ricans giving up so easily, so a couple of years later (way later) a puerto rican democratic leader called luis munoz marin, made an agreement with the people of puerto rico and a treaty with the United States in order for PR to be associated with the US but without giving up PR as a official state. US was interested and we all got american citizenship rights form the US, with the purpose that US got PR resources, which were sugar cane, coffee, military territories, arecibo statellite, mines, one of the bermuda triangular points (the abyss depth to for scientific research, and pharmaceutical factories.

did we sell our country?no.
would third world countries or immigrants would be willing to make the same treaty with the US like puerto rico did? yes.
why haven't this occur yet? ask US
i sure would like to and we could all scratch our backs.

In a nutshell: Cuba was trying to become independent from Spain. The U.S. sent a military ship over to Cuba to protect American interests, but it was sunk by the Spanish. Thus the Spanish-American War started. The treaty of Paris was signed and part of the bargain was America was to acquire Puerto Rico.

And that's in a super big nutshell.

For free military protection. They were offered state hood and turned it down. This is a real slap in the face of real Americans.
