Why do all people follow the sterotype that jamaica is a horrible and crime ridden place you could go? |
i agree, in kingston, i would be scared out of my wits to walk around there at night but thats so in major cities in the us? Its like the us there are good parts and bad parts. and not everyone there is going to try and scam/ steal from you/ or take you hostage. Of all of you that answer, how many are going to say, i was robbed/beaten/mugged in jamaica? most likely none, right? yes.
It is no different if i were to walk in downtown la at night wearing flashy jewelry and nice clothes, your going to get mugged.
I want to move there when i get older and when i tell people they say nice seeing you, or your gonna get murdered, or things like that.
How do you feel about this?
If you are one of the people that think it its a crime ridden horibble place, give me your reasons, and how many times youve been there. Additional Details and to christopher i guarentee they were raised in kingston when martial law went into effect and all guns and ammo were taken from citezins but only criminals had guns, realizing that the government just help them rob/beat/rape/kill millions of people. |

All people. You ask? I have never thought that. Don't lump everyone together. There are certain areas of just about any city, state, or country that should be avoided because of crime. This doesn't make the whole area off limits or bad.
I have been to Jamaica three times in the past 5 years. |

Because anyone who has been there in the last few years has seen the poverty and corruption, and has gained an idea of how the people have been opressed for so long. They are ripe for a revolution, listen to the music of todays Jamaica. There is a warning for the rich and corrupt. They are going to be eaten soon........... |

Purely Jamaica
 |
Using the words, "all people" is a generalization.
I've been there around 13 times. I never stay in a super-resort or mega club. I've seen the good and the bad. I have been mugged--it was a friends fault. After living in Milwaukee for many years I can tell you that I'd much rather walk down a street in Jamaica than be caught on the north-side of Milwaukee after dark. I will continue to go to Jamaica until I don't personally feel safe. If you act like a tourist and flash money, you will be targeted. It could be happen in Miami or Negril.
Its all relative with any news. People generally only want to hear misery. Parts of Jamaica fill that void quite nicely for most media outlets.
Stereotypes are always much easier to repeat, rather, than to formulate new ideas. |

Keep your coins; I want change.

alright, so i went on a cruise last year and there was a stop for a day in jamaica and we went on this touristy tour and it went all over the place and nothing happened. i didnt see any violence. in fact, i want to live there when im older too, and people either tell me that im gonna get killed or they ask me if i smoke pot. theres obviously violence and crime there, but thats not all of it. you cant just judge it by what you hear on the news because the news reports bad stories because it sells. people dont want to hear about nice stories, so they dont report them. its the same with detroit. the bad isnt all of it. |

The real problem is that Jamaica is an ISLAND.
Many people do not accept that its a complicated place. They dont accept 2 simple facts:
1. That the island isnt one big beach.
2. That several things can be taking place on the island simultaeously without affecting each other. The island is large enough and diverse enough for many 'truths' to exist.
Some people even think that you can drive from one end of the island to the other in an hour or two....or less. Yet still, while YOU claim that the total violence is A NEWS LIE, others will claim that the BEACHS AND HOTEL RESORTS are a total LIE.
Who is right? |

Id say cos good news isnt news!its like where im from(North Ireland) even some people in the south think a lot of us are crazy bigots running around shooting each other,or if you went up2belfast ur gonna get beaten up or something just cos ur Irish or ur British!Admitidly there are a few idiots here but in general most people are decent, hardworking and fairly tolerant. The point is how do people know this when the only time they see people from here is on the news when theres a riot or something.probably the same in Jamaica,n I find the people who stereotype the most are usually the ones who have never met anyone from the place there slaggin off.Just forget about them man n do what you think is best,Enjoy Jamaica! |

Tourists always attract attention, so go figure why flashing money around would attract con men and thieves. I didn't know Kingston had that reputation so I'm glad you told us. Why do people tell you things when you move to any city? Probably because they think you'll stay there and they won't see you again. I'm sure that there are dangerous parts in every city in the world, but it can happen in rural areas and the suburbs too, so why worry until it happens? I once knew someone who fell off a cliff and died. He was more messed up than another who got run over by a car. Reputations are built on something--that grain of truth that's the basis for every story. It's how the story comes out that counts. |

The fact that crime occurs in major cities, as you said L.A. being one, makes no difference to the fact that Jamaica is a violent place to live. Los Angeles has a population of about 6 million...JA has barely 3 million. LA has about 400 murders a year, JA has 1600 last year....
Soooooooooooo, JA has half the population of a major US city, yet has 3 times the murder rate ! The math doesn't lie, despite STINGS idiot remark that the press makes up the numbers.
The crime that I've delt with personally, all happened on the northside in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Falmouth...but I still make sure I'm outa Kingston or Spanishtown BEFORE it gets dark ! |

its true the crime rate is very high for an island so small but as a jamaican currently living in kingston i can honestly say its not so bad at all.
people dont understand the crime so they say whatever they wish - ive heard it all.
The vybes in jamaica is great and so are the poeople. like in any other country - if u mess with or hurt people they will act out and im sure it happens every where. Ive neva heard of a tourist been robbed and killed in jamaica-we always welcome them.
feel free to come anytime you wish - i promise u will love it |

Jamaican is more advance in ITT than most of the other Caribbean Islands. There is greater traffic between Jamaica and the USA than most of the other Caribbean islands. There are things that happens overnight on my street, and my friend will call me in the morning, from Britain, asking about it, and I'm not even aware of it yet. News travels fast, and unfortunately for Jamaica the bad news is faster than even Usain Bolt. Crime is everywhere not only Jamaica, but some people always want to point out the tear in your pants, while their *** is at the mercy of the wind. |

our cities are crime riddenn so what is the point of saying it is any worse there.be a smart traveller, don't act stupid and flash your money around, and be respectful of those who live there,a simple no thank you will do in most cases.... |

Well, as a teenager, I have things to say.
I have been to Jamaica 4 times.
My experiences were not bad, they were pretty relaxing and fun.
Most people that are saying its a horrible place have not been there and are just following the stereo types. Of course there is crime (only in some areas). If you are alert and aware of your surroundings, you will be alright. I did not stay at a hotel, I stayed in Ocho Rios and its not a horrible place.
I went to many beaches (clean and nice clear water), dunns river falls, Mandeville, negril water park, and many other beautiful places.
Kingston is a nice place too, but the crime there is higher than any where else in Jamaica.
People can say horrible things about this beautiful island but all I know is that I have been there and did not experience any of those things.
To me, Jamaica is a very fun place to be. |
