Why does the US have an embargo on Cuba? What does the US want from Cuba?

In 1959, or a little later fidel began to nationalize private businesses. That included the yanks' . The USA government was not happy with that and declared the embargo.

Today they say that they are using it as a bargaining tool, offering to eliminate it if fidel or Raul open a democratic rule

Oh, the non Cubans that know more about Cuba than us. Wonderful !
It would be much better if they dedicated their very valuable time to talk about their own country

The history isn't quite as others set out. Interesting

You are right about the usa. They don't really care about what fidel has done to us
But about the rest, not like that, you know

We know the facts of our country

Back in the 60's Cuba (Fidel Castro) did 2 things that REALLY ticked off the U.S. First , Fidel decided to nationalize private businesses. There were many large and small business owned and invested in by Americans in Cuba. Fidel simply TOOK them...stole them. He did not buy them or negotiate or in any way recompense the owners. He simply took them and many businesses lost millions of dollars. Then , Cuba...Fidel, that is...allowed the Soviet Union to place intercontinental nuclear armed missiles in Cuba. These missiles were aimed at the eastern and southern parts of the U.S. I remember vividly because those missiles were aimed at where I was attending college. Understandably, the U.S. was very upset about this. Now, imagine , if tomorrow, Canada took control of all American owned businesses and investments in Canada without paying the owners. Then imagine if they placed nuclear missiles along the border aimed at American cities. Do you think the U.S. might be a bit upset by that? Or if England did that to France? It was the same situation then. Fidel backed down on the missiles and they were removed. But he never gave back or paid for all the hotels and other businesses he stole. That is why there is still a trade embargo against Cuba.

The U.S. embargo against Cuba is all bull the U.S. does business with far worse regimes on a regular basis and the only people hurt by the embargo are average Cubans the elite and ruling class still have all they want and need.

As usual American hypocrisy hurts those that can least afford it.

Why the sun rises every day ? I thought the answer to that question was as known as to this one. Amazing !

Oh, well, I will explain about the sun later.

Like charlie said correctly, in 1959 fidel seized power in cuba and nationalized all properties, including those of the usa. And you know the rules in the usa. You can kill, steal, etc, but don't affect the business ( have you read the Godfather ? )

And fidel ruined their businesses, a situation that has persisted until today.
Anyway, a friend of mine with a Master in International Business Administration made his thesis on the idea that the usa don't really care about fidel, because if fidel disappears, then the business in south florida would go to cuba.

But they keep the embargo to save face, to make the exiled cubans think that they care about them, and perhaps with the idea that sometime the cuban regime might pay them back

They say that they use the embargo as a bargaining tool and offer to remove it if fidel allows a democracy in cuba.
Of course, big bad old fidel will never do that, but perhaps its heirs might

About what do they want from cuba, ask them, but don't wait for the real answer

The history isn't quite as others set out.

The US wasn't really concerned about what Fidel did to the Cubans.

At first, he allowed foreign-owned businesses to continue.

For example, it was only when the US-owned refineries refused to process oil in Cuba, that they took them over.

The Castro government also agreed compensation terms via the governments of every other country. The US refused to talk to the Cuban government, and so their citizens received no compensation.

Castro tried to talk to the US government. He even learned golf to try and be sociable. But when he went to the US, the vice-president refused to meet him. (The VP then was Richard Nixon !!!)

Thank you for asking this question. I have often wondered the same thing. I knew about the missiles but not about the stolen businesses and money grabbing.
