Because of ego. The United States said they would ban people from going there and likewise Castro said he was going to ban Americans from going there too and through that both sides turned their backs to one another.
The USA is also still upset that Castro confiscated tons of US investments in Cuba and wouldn't restitute the US companies that owned stuff. E.g. the railroads etc. Still to this day whenever the US finds a source of money that belongs to Cuba they take it, and put it into a fund that pays companies that lost money in Cuba... The confiscation of US owner property is what brought on the embargo.... If there's one thing you must never do in life, it is take away the USA's money because they will do everything to your country then to get it back...
Ever notice? Saddam was given the keys to the city of Detroit and was the USA's best guy to keep Iran in check and then a just after Bush got into power once Saddam started saying he was going to change Iraq from accepting US$ to the Euro all hell broke loose and he was no longer a friend to the west??? Heck all the WMDs which he had from the first war were given to him by the USA to use against Iran. Whatever you do don't toy with the US' money because that will put you in the US' crosshairs.
Libya was the same thing. Whenever money was found to belong to persons connected to the Government of Libya, it was confiscated and went to help restitute the victims of the plane bombing.
Since the late 1950's-1960's Cuba has eased up on the ban of Americans. |

We didnt take too lightly the fact that many moons ago they allowed The Soviets to park missles there and aim them at us. Since then they have been on the U.S's naughty list with an embargo against them. If you ask me, I'd try and buy some resort real estate down there and wait for Castro to kick it and be ready to take on the american tourists again. |

The US and Cuba have an embargo in place. Stated by former President JF Kennedy. For Canadians it's a popular destination for vacations |

Cuba does not ban Americans in fact they welcome Americans. It's the U. S government. They don't see any harm in dealing with Communist China. The U. S. is strongly influenced by the exiled Cubans in Southern Florida.
Here is an add on to my Wednesday December 19 reply to let you know the following posters are so very wrong.
Beezyfre is way out of wack,Cuba is very safe and stable although Fidel Castro is ailing his brother Raoul has things well under control.
snizz35 is also wrong, Cuba welcomes Americans however the U. S. does not allow most of its citizens to go unless they are journalists, educators, missionaries etc.
Hound dawg is also wrong, Miami is a far cry from the real Cuba. When someone asks you would want to go to a Communist country, you could ask why do many Americans want to go to Communist China or Viet Namn?
If you have the opportunity, Sadie C I hope you will go to Cuba, meet the people who are very poor but proud. For the first time in decades they are not a banana republic dominated by the U. S. A. |

Most people don't know how close we came to war with Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crises with John Kennedy. It was an extremely tense situation with Fidel Castro (who is still alive and in power). |

a long long time ago the soviet union decided they wanted to nuke the united states and cuba allowed them to put their nukes there and so in turn we have lost relations with them :D

And another view could be that the Diaz Balart family haven't forgiven Fidel for divorcing their aunt Mirta (his first wife).
Cuba is probably one of the safest countries that you could visit.
It is also the only communist country that dances to a salsa beat. |

Richard K is right.
Only the US makes issue of travel to Cuba. However, Cuba allows Americans to go to Cuba and vice versa. There are circumstances that provides entrance into Cuba. Many who have family travel to Cuba regularly.
As well, there are flights that go to and from the US in Havana.
It's not as difficult as many make it out to be.
Cuba loves people and will welcome you into their country warmly.
Check the site so you can understand how a US citizen can travel to Cuba. The only thing is that you can't use US funds for certain things. |

Cuba doesn't allow Americans. Every other nation is welcome. My sister is German and she went! |

I don't care for you much

The top 10 people listed here are so wrong, I wonder where you went to school. Cuba does NOT BAN US citizens. The US bans its citizens from visiting there- a violation of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, which states anyone has the right to travel anywhere.
Secondly, you can get flights to Havana out of JFK or MIA on American or Continental through charter services, but it usually requires permission from a higher-up in the government.
Thirdly, who is the retard who suggested visiting Miami because it's 'the same thing?' Thank you for setting the US back about 100 years. Havana is 10x better than Miami, any day :)
Lastly, the 'best answer' selected by the asker is way off target- way, way off. Why would any agency of the US government have or want anything to do with a Thai citizen living in Canada interested in travelling to Cuba?
Sincerely,
your u.s. travel agents |

The United States citizens can not travel to Cuba because they are a communist country that does not have good relations with the US. There is no relationship at all; no traveling, no trading. |

Just Americans are banned from Cuba. If you want to go there, and it is very nice, fly out of Canada. They are no flights to Cuba from the USA because they set missiles up on that island in the 60's and they where aimed at us. JFK , the greatest president ever, shut them down. No dealing with Castro ever since. |

Because they are a enemy nation.
Actually you can travel there, but you are not allowed to spend money there. |
