Why is is that so many Jamaicans in Jamaica are bleaching there skin?

I'm no expert, but I think it all boils down to low self-esteem. Most persons who bleach don't feel that they have anything to offer to the world besides their looks--they feel that opportunities, whether for jobs or for mates come only with their physical appearance.

Unfortunately, the flawed idea that beauty only comes in the form of light skin has permeated their minds, leading them to use dangerous chemicals to bleach. Despite the success of persons regardless of their skin colour, many still believe that people with lighter skin tones are ideals of beauty and are destined for wealth and success. These ideas are also inculcated in the minds of females (and males) from a tender age by parents, friends and other relatives.

So I think the motivation to bleach is two-fold; it stems from low self-esteem and peer pressure.

It's ironic though, that the same people who bleach because they think they will attain greater social, economic or romantic success never actually do. They just end up looking ridiculous and become bound to a habit for life that exposes them to many health risks.

Have you ever noticed how unhealthy people with bleached skin look? Red, peeling skin, or darkened blue blotches--where is the beauty in that? Most bleaching creams contain Hydroquinone and Mercury. These have been proven to inhibit the production of melanin, a natural protection for the skin against the cancer-causing ultraviolet rays of the sun. Thus, bleached skin is more susceptible to skin cancer.

I just wish we could all recognize that we are wonderfully made by a loving Creator, and embrace ourselves for who we are.

My view? I prefer clean, dark-skinned women.

Why do they bleach? They are insecure. The people who they believe can influence their lives do not share my opnion.

Obviously it has become part of the culture if averyone is doing it. Maybe the "non black " influence just like everywhere else in the world has poisoned there minds. I personally have never seen this go on. I am not black, but I think that black skin is beautiful, the darker or lighter it does not matter, but naturally with all of the sun, the dark skinned people are very naturally beautiful. I think that it is sad, and a waste of money. I hope that this changes, because, if you were not born white, you will never be, no matter how much bleach you put on, the sun, will bring your natural skin color right back, no bleach can erase who you really are.

that a bummer, i wonder if they stay out of the sun as well, cuz, it seems to be a no win situation, with all the sun that ja gets one must use alot of these bleaching products in keeping up these appearances. they may very well soon be walking around the same complexion of micheal jackson and that's not too good!

I have no idea I guess is cause dem wah turn browning for real...most of them just look scary and it all look like the man dem a bleach harder than the women these days and it nah work out at all cause now me haffi overlook all the foolishness my man do cause mi mighta leff him and end up haffi settle fi a bleach out face critter. And trust me if u go downtown and u not bleaching is like u nah seh nutten and people a gi u bere strange look like "a wha do she"...and i'm ALREADY brown. Trust me if anybody drive downtown on a saturday morning 99% of the people a bleach all dog and mosquito a bleach. I think most of them just look like some duppy and it well expensive to bleach too cause is not just one thing dem use...before dem go invest the money or save towards a bright future. But in them defense I can say I had a friend who was bleaching and she looked AWFUL and then she stopped and now smoother or more even-toned than she caa find so maybe that's the grand plan for most of them...neway I'm ranting so i'm gonna stop...but long and short is I guess they can do what they want but them must be more mindful of others and stop try gi ppl heart-attack.

Why the girls bleach their skin : My best guess, they're trying to keep Bob D. off the island, cause THAT would do it !! Just my opinion, I could be wrong ;-)
