Why is it that the well educated & successful Trinidadians...? |
speak proper English, they wear their education on their sleeves so to speak & look down at the ones who speak dialect as being stupid but when you see them on an international forum or online somewhere, they more "Trini" than all of us put together.
Doesn't that make you want to laugh! |

Not really - I can talk to suit my crowd! If I am in the Office I won't speak slang to my CEO, but when I am hanging out with friends, of course I'll speak true trini dialect.
But I can see where you are coming from. Stay true to your culture and its native tongue! |

They probably just take pride in their education because they may think a majority of their culture is not formally educated. This is the same in every culture, and its been that way for hundreds of years. Social Darwinism: the strongest will survive. Education is something to take great pride in, but I don't believe in using it as a weapon to make other people feel inferior. They probably feel that they should represent the smartest of their culture, HOWEVER when they are in front of non trinidadians, they feel they have to represent by being "trini" because they take pride in their roots anyway... |

hey im educated (bachelor's in psychotherapy) and i dont look down at nobody man.. from p/town.. i have my dialect and im damn well proud of being trini!! to me its the best thing in the world.. but i get what ur saying.. my cousin is like that and every chance i get i knock her off her fake pedestal because she still lives in Trinidad and she talks like shes the one living in Toronto ( i'm in toronto). She hides her accent and she constantly talks about going to live in the US.
I think its because she is emotionally and physically insecure about who she is as a person and a woman and decides that since the things about herself that she dislikes she can change but shes too lazy to fix her faults so she decides to blame it on the one thing she cant change which is her ethnicity. |

Ive wondered about that so much.......I love my country and felow countrymen whether "formally" educated or not. It is a shame that we dont represent ourselves as one.......and yeah I know a couple ah dem posers as the fella above say.....people doh understand to just always be natural. I also believe if more of us were concerned with educating the ones who are not instead of belittling them Trini would be even more sweet! |

You have to speak to suit your audience. Its pointless speaking/writing in dialect if no one undertands you, just to prove you are a true trini. I am not in the habit of speaking or writing in dialect and I consider myself to be a true trini. |

be yuhself. daiz my motto. i have a degree in education an yuh cyar ramp wit me wen it come to my native tongue!
The thing we all have to understand and respect is that our dialect is a language all on its own. It has verbs and tenses and rules just like the standard. We should be proud of it. |

I consider myself as a well-educated/successful Trinidadian.
Attended prep schools (St. Xavier's Prep) and (St. Joseph's Convent) when I use to live in Trinidad.
Such upbringing allowed my speech to be naturally proper English. However, it did not influence my perceptions about other ppl who spoke with a dialect. I think that dialects add beauty/unique difference to a vicinity. As one who continues to crave wisdom and value education, I am not judgmental and dislike those who are! such negative thinking/perceptions create fundamentalism in countries.
Though I've got to admit, at times, I have trouble reading dialects. I understand when spoken but unable to grasp it when written.
Trinis tend to regard "differences" as a threat! which is why the country is so chaotic. I hope one day, each one of us view every Trini being with respect and acceptance, despite creed and race for we all deserve an equal place in the island of Trinidad and Tobago. |
