Everywhere I go in the U.S, Canada or United Kingdom people are surprise to hear that I am Jamaican, maybe this is because of how I act. People should know that Jamaica is a CIVILIZED COUNTRY....

well the problem as it relates to violence in jamaica is not influenced by any one factor or any one person or organization can be singled out and blamed for this plague... i believe that firstly some Jamaican s has not been fully emancipated.... our minds..... they are still at the place where people should decide whats best for them and force them to make the best of themselves.... i have seen where my high school peers because of no head master behind them flunk out high school and at the end of the day knowing that they can sit on the corner and beg a few friend and they would actually get by.... and over time seein their peers climbing the corporate lader of sucess get "bad mind" cand set out to destroy them by robbing and killing the hard working jamaica....
Secondly i would have to blame the environment (both the people and the weather) The weather in Jamaica is too conducive for idleness and streetside liming.. we should have some cold winter where the idle youth who have to get some jobs to find some the necessary comodities to make these horrid winter conditions pleasent...and wake them up from living the "American life" that is vividly seen on BET..lol... but seriously though the people of the communities should also be blamed as they watched these people progress from just gathering on the corner to being notorious outlaws and they play the see no evil, hear no evil game>> until they have to either conform to their laws or move out of the community or die.....
Once ago females would not be killed there was a sporadic outburst of violence but now since the mothers has started not to care and to chose other people over their children then their child unable to feel the love rebell by smoking weed and by having a deep hatred for females... not to mention the all time scarcity or absent of GOOD fathers in the home....>>>
YES The Government.... i must commend them as they presently have a surplus of instutions that the youth can go to be qualified But if they dont want to go whose to be Blamed??? Secondly i belive that people see correctional centres as a vacation spot where u get three hot meal a day from hard working people.... A reward for the heinous crimes they have commited.... what i think that they should have them be doing is digging some marl hill and fixing the many roads for a meal... so then it is not longer seen as a heaven for the kings of crime.....
Thirdly the government from way back has been so corrupt that now it is impossible from them to change or to change the views of people..........

As it relates to the media more muders happen in new york than in jamaica per year but because there is a bigger population in NY the percentage is smaller.... also they need to stop as another answer sd that its way out of context now........

NB. did u know that in some areas where there is a DON the community tends to be more productive and administered better than other areas that are Government "ruled"

But thats my "little" take on it>>>> sad to say but at this rate i think its better to HANG one killer than having him KILLING 10 people.....on that note thats for reading!!!

People are people, some love to fight, some make love, it happen all over the world

Violence stems from various aspects of things. Some people cannot communicate effectively by just talking or writing, so they think the only way they can express themselves is through violence. Some people also think that if they use violence then others won't mess with them because they will be intimidated or afraid of the violent individual. I think it has to do with the kind of childhood that they had.

I think that is Jamaica's biggest problem right now. We have the best of everything here but tourists are being driven away if the current spate of violent acts continue.

Despite the way it seems Jamaica isn't such a violent country yes we have our share of violence but this tend to be concentrated to certain areas. And which country doesn't have its share of violence? Apart from some areas Jamaica is a wonderful country with some of the most amazing people. it is just that the few bad that get all the spot light making us seem as if we are a bunch of savages, but we are one of the best places to be, people are fun, entertainment is great, politics need improvement. i live in Kingston and i get a mix of everything and its not that bad.

Thank you Ms Glitz you answered the question perfectly.

Its mostly because of the ineffectiveness of their government. Many persons are unemployed and as a result they take their frustrations to the streets. The violence and overall crime rate has been steadily decreasing however. I mean there is crime everywhere, no one can stop that and Jamaica is the same. Most of the 'violence' that happens there is highly exaggerated. Jamaica, being a popular island is always on watch by the international media and most of the stories are blown way out of proportion. I live in the U.S. but my family and I come to Jamaica every year. We also have a house here. Its the most beautiful island with the most beautiful and friendly people. Most of the stuff that you hear isn't true and many people when they come here and see for themselves they realize that :)
