Well, why not ?
As somebody mentioned, there is no reason for not to.
In 1936, England prime minister , chamberlain, met with that nice lad, Adolf, in Munich, to deliver Checkoslovackia to him on a silver platter. For that, he received Adolf's assurance that he would not be bad to him Trading, you know
Nations have been trading who whoever they wanted to
Who cares about what fidel is and does do ?
Hum, Canada is NOT America. Interesting. Then, where is it ?
In Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia ?
I look really forward to know the answer. So far, I thought that Canada was part of America, more precisely, north America
¡ Fantástico ! Ya cayeron los comunistas con una de sus ideas. Cuéntame algo del Coma Andante, josh
I would like to request a tiny little bit favor, please. I would really, really appreciate it. Please.
When you mention Cuba DO NOT associate it with fidel kastro. Trading does benefit big brother fidel and the little brother Raúl. It DOES NOT benefit Cuba.
We have too much of a disgrace for having our country governed by a comunist dictator with having besides that, people saying that Cuba is fidel, like López Portillo from Mexico did once |

May you be a little more clear ? Why are you asking this question ?
I don't understand. All countries trade with Cuba. Why do you ask about Canada ?

All countries trade with Cuba. Canada as well. Why do you ask this ?
We receive ( or received ) rice and other foods from China, and many things from other countries. I remember once solving a Canadian cheese.
Hum, somebody says that to suggest that they ( Canada )don't care about other countries is incorrect and insulting. Canada is well know for its humanitarian efforts throughout the world. Trading with Cuba helps Cuba.
I must say that it looks very nice on paper, but the fact that they are overlooking is that we are governed by a ruthless comunist dictatorship that cares nothing for the country and its people . The two brothers consider Cuba as their personal possession, and therefore, saying that Canada does care for Cuba by trading with it is totally out of reality. Is not insulting.
It is a fact that they want to ignore that trading with Cuba means NOTHING to Cuba or the Cuban people.
It only helps the two castros
Please, put things in a real, factual perspective
Thank you |

So far, I don't see a reason to not to.
Canada can do whatever it wants . They can trade with north Korea, Iran, Osama bin laden. Why not ?
Now I see that Canada is not America. Excuse me, but I am a little bit stunned. I was taught in school that Canada was in America. It seems that it moved somewhere . Can you explain where did it go ? I would like to get my knowledge correct.
About what you say concerning the angry American giving thumbs down, that is unlikely.
If you mean the yanks, they are only concerned with making money ( business ), eating coca cola and drinking hamburgers.
As you correctly said, in Cuba the comunists HATE the USA. Big bad old fidel has been teaching that for 50 years ( I think the term is brainwashing ), and still there are a few comunists in Cuba, either because they are morons, because they live well, or for any other reason
Little correction:
Trading with Cuba helps the dictators, NOT CUBA
To slipstre:
Well said ! Finally someone with good reality perception
You are totally right ! |

As an American who has friends with family still in Cuba (some of the family made it to the US, most didn't) I can say that trade with the Cuban government makes little difference to the lives of actual Cubans. Most are very poor and the governments are more concerned with making political points than what happens to the people (all the governments - the US, Canada and Cuba). Hopefully things will change someday soon. The people of Cuba are being used as pawns by the government it seems. Where does the money go?
Canada can trade, it's their choice obviously, but they should admit to themselves that they aren't "helping" anyone. Many times Canada likes to be he opposite of whatever the US is just because it is the opposite - it's strange to define oneself that way.
And yes, Canada is in the Americas - but it was Europeans that first called residents of the US "Americans" - we didn't pick the name ourselves. Blaming Americans for calling themselves Americans is laughable when it is the accepted practise worldwide. When you say "America" - it is assumed that one is talking about the US. Taking issue with this long time accepted usage (again - which started in Europe) is just being argumentative in the extreme. Blame the English and the French - they first chose the moniker.
It is no more arrogant to call my country "America" than it is to answer to the name my parents christened me with. I chose neither, but they are the accepted names for both. |

As far as I know, Canada is in America. It seems that someone here believes it is located somewhere else |

Because Canada is not America. And to all the "angry" Americans putting the thumbs down, how many of you actually know why you hate Cuba? Probably not many, but that has been ingrained in you for the past 40 years. A while back in Cuba, I met a Cuban tour guide and he was so hateful towards Americans, when I asked him why, he said "just because". America should trade with Cuba too. In case you haven't noticed, America is not making too many new friends in the world lately. Time for a change of mindset. |

We have never "not" traded with Cuba. Let America deal with their own problems. |

Be aware that the USA not only bans trade with Cuba but interferes with other nations' trade by refusing access to the USA by any vessel that has touched Cuba. That interference with other countries' policy is unacceptable.
By the way, Canada has no agreements with the USA to support them in aggression against another country, such as the undeclared war on Iraq. NATO agreements only cover an attack on a member nation as an act of war or a declared war recognised by the UN.
The tourist industry is a major one so Canadians are already heavily involved in trade with Cuba, as well as with other commercial activity.
Good. |

On the first place because it helps Cubans directly, Canada has many investment in Cuba providing employment and very good working conditions for thousands and thousands of Cubans, eg. Nickel Mines in Moa, Holguin, Sherritt International (oil drilling and power generator using natural gas, and Sherritt Green a company producing fruits and vegetables in Cuba) These agreements are mutually advantageous, all the Cuban nickel is processed in Canada because Canadian electricity is cheaper and they have great Technology there! Canadians are very loved and welcomed in Cuba, this is the first market for Cuban Tourism and the most important one! But no doubt that all the trade and investments help to THE CUBAN PEOPLE ON THE FIRST PLACE THANKS CANADA!!!
All Americans are welcome to Cuba as well, those of you who have been here know that Cubans have no problem at all with you! WE Cubans are welcoming and genuine people, this is beyond politics or ideologies, Cuba welcomes all! |

Beardo
|
Why shouldn't it ?
Canada needs Cuban nickel, Canadian tourists want to stay in Cuba, and Canadian business can sell goods to Cuba for a profit. |

Everyone else trades with Cuba. Why should Canada join the minority that doesn't??? The system there will not be run by Castro forever as you've seen and his brother isn't much younger.. So guess what? When Cuba changes Canada would already be-in on the ground floor. |

Well, Canada does trade with Cuba and has been for years. Cuba has excellent resources that are exported to other countries for necessity. Beardo mentioned nickel...we use nickel in so many products and Cuba has it to export. They have medicinal products that are of benefit both in Cuba and in Canada (as well as other parts of the world). Countries are always trading with each other and Cuba has never stopped trading and doing business outside of their country.
Many say that the US stopped doing business and trading with Cuba, thus the embargo.
But the interesting thing is that the US actually DOES do business and trading with Cuba. Hmnnnn.....
Back to your question though....Your question seems to be based on a law and ethics/economic standpoint. So in regards to a commerce and economics viewpoint (as well as law and ethics), Canada is "number one in tourism in Cuba, with 400,000 Canadians who will be visiting Cuba. We are number two in investment in Cuba. Trade and investment are two good ways to promote dialogue and promote Canadian values like human rights and democracy." (direct quote with comments on Cuba in Parliament since 2000 from http://www.canadiannetworkoncuba.ca/CanadaGov/2004election.shtml)
*edit: for those who are confused about Canada not being part of the America....well, let's explain it for clarity. Canada is a country on its own and is NOT in the United States of AMERICA....Canada is only located in the North American continent...not country.
So Canada has not actually 'moved' since the last time anyone saw it on the map. |

there is no reason why we shouldn't trade with Cuba. To suggest we don't care about other countries is incorrect and insulting Every country in the Western world with the exception of the U. S.trades with Cuba. Canada is well known for its humanitarian efforts throughout the world and hopefully we will continue to keep that reputation, helping others is a Canadian tradition, one of the main reasons we are respected throughout the world. Trading with Cuba helps Cuba |

Good answer tropical ........ and why should the u.s not ...??? i believe if for no other reason than not wanting to continue looking like bigger asses than we already do for not trading with them.. .. uncle sam will be eating humble pie instead of apple pie before long as we cant afford to have more imaginary threats and enemies than we do . especially ones that have no oil and are not a threat to our security ? .. .... heres a hot news flash ....the other day as i was sitting in a little coffee shop in a very political town playing on this web site ,i was kindly interrupted by a wanna be hopeful congressman who all but stuck his brown nose up( i mean in my coffee cup ..) and as he was leaving , i chased him out the door and called him back over to ask him what his role would be in foriegn affairs and how knowledgable he was .....( specifically on the issue of the cuban embargo ) .... this guy is a republican you should know , and i bet youll never guess what his response was to me about the trade embargo ? yes ,in typical political fashion , he threw the blame NOT on W. AND THE ELEPHANTS ,but mr . dead kennedy and the democrats , but assured me with his almost speechless bull crap that the u.s government was working hard to improve its relations with the brothers as he handed me his lever number and phony smile ..i hope canadas trade relations with cuba makes the u.s feel even more embarrased of its behavior in a now truly global economy where uncle sam may one day find himself banging on fidels grandsons door for a loaf of bread and a cup of sugar ... |
